GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team shut out New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) opponent Stockton University, 22-0 on Thursday.
The Profs are 27-7 overall with a 12-3 conference record. Designated hitter
Mitch Walker (jr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) and first baseman
Anthony Harrold (sr. Woodbury, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) led the way with three hits each. Walker had two doubles and scored four times, while Harrold totaled a double and a home run and three runs batted in (RBI). Second baseman
Alex Kokos (jr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) contributed two hits, a triple, three RBIs and two runs. Catcher
Steven Hewa (sr. Galloway, NJ/Absegami) produced four RBIs on two hits.
Right-hander
Danny Serreino (sr. Jackson, NJ/Jackson Liberty) earned the win (4-2), pitching five innings, striking out 11 batters and giving up three hits. Righty
Victor Lebron (sr. Blackwood, NJ/Highland Reg.) tossed two innings and allowed no hits. Left-hander
Patrick Sudnikovich (fr. Mendham, NJ/West Morris Mendham) threw one inning and fanned two batters. Right-hander
Andrew Cartier (sr. Estell Manor, NJ/Buena Reg.) closed the game in the ninth and struck out three.
The Ospreys have a 13-16 mark and they are 3-12 in the NJAC. Right fielder Brendan Doherty (fr. Middletown, NJ/Middletown N.) posted two hits, while third baseman JJ Swentkowski (sr. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) and first baseman Shawne Eldridge (fr. Jamesburg, NJ/Monroe Twp.) added one hit apiece. Righty James Manos (jr. Freehold, NJ/Freehold Borough) suffered the loss (2-3), pitching 0.2 innings and allowing five hits and six earned runs.
The Brown and Gold built an early 6-0 lead in the first. Center fielder
Matt Woods (sr. Berlin, NJ/Eastern Reg.) opened with a walk and advanced to second on a single by shortstop
Dillon Mendel (sr. Sparta, NJ/Sparta). Walker drove in Woods with a double to center field. After Harrold walked to load the bases, Kokos nailed a triple down the right field line to bring in three runs. The Profs tacked on two additional runs during the inning when third baseman
Nick Schooley (so. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) and Hewa each chipped in a RBI single.
The bats stayed hot for Rowan in the second as Harrold blasted a home run to left center to have a 7-0 advantage. The Profs kept rolling in the third, scoring four runs to extend the margin to 11-0. The Brown and Gold capitalized on a Stockton error and brought in two runs. Harrold had a RBI single up the middle to plate Mendel, while Hewa knocked in Walker with a sacrifice fly to left field.
The scoring spree continued as Rowan added five runs in the fifth and six in the sixth innings. The Profs' defense stepped up in the final three innings as they only allowed one hit.
The baseball team heads to Stockton to complete the two-game series on Friday, April 26 at 3:30 p.m.
