GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University softball team won two New Jersey Athletic Conference games over Rutgers-Newark on Saturday. The Profs shut out the Scarlet Raiders, 16-0 in five innings in the first game and took the second, 9-1 in six innings.
Rowan is 24-10 overall and 10-4 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. Rutgers-Newark has a 14-22 record with a 5-9 conference mark.
Designated player
Kelly Duffy (so. Sayreville, NJ/Sayreville War Mem.) led the Profs in the opener. She totaled two hits, five RBIs and two runs. Duffy recorded a three run homer in the second inning. Third baseman
Cassandra Gerard (sr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) collected three hits, three RBIs and three runs. Pinch hitter
Shea Branda (jr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River E.) contributed with two RBIs.
Right-hander
Jesse DeDomenico (jr. East Windsor, NJ/Hightstown) went four innings for the victory. She (13-5) only allowed one hit and had five strikeouts. At the plate, DeDomenico had one hit and two RBIs and scored four runs. Righty
Emily August (so. Mahwah, NJ/Mahwah) was on the mound for the final inning. Jackie Lara (fr. Ridgefield, NJ/Ridgefield) had the loss (6-6). She had one hit along with pinch hitter Megan Tomaselli (fr. Bound Brook, NJ/Bound Brook).
In the second game, right-hander
Lauren Shannon (jr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) was the winning pitcher. She (9-5) scattered five hits in six innings and gave up one run. Shannon struck out eight batters. Righty Michelle Capizzano (fr. Kenilworth, NJ/Union County VoTech) suffered the loss (2-9).
Shortstop
Carly Anderson (sr. Nutley, NJ/Nutley) compiled three hits, a double, two RBIs and one run. Left fielder
Morgan Zane (r. Pittsgrove, NJ/A.P. Schalick) had two hits, a home run, three RBIs and two runs. Catcher
Christina Guarino (so. West Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) chipped in with two hits, one RBI and two runs.
For Rutgers-Newark, third baseman Julie Contravo (so. Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) had a double and the lone RBI. Left fielder Brielle Mattiello (jr. Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus) was two for three at the plate with one run scored.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning. With two outs, Anderson had a single to right field, scoring Guarino. Rowan exploded for six runs in the fifth. Zane doubled in a run and Guarino had a RBI single. Guarino and Branda crossed home plate on an error. Anderson and DeDomenico recorded back-to-back RBI doubles.
The Scarlet Raiders' run came in the sixth inning. Mattiello singled down the left field line and came home on Contravo's double to left field. In the bottom half, Zane recorded a two-run homer to end the game early because of the eight-run rule.
Next week, Rowan plays a conference doubleheader at Rutgers-Camden on Thursday, April 25 at 3:30 p.m.
