Softball Wins 3-2 And 9-1 Against William Paterson

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University softball team won 3-2 and 9-1 in five innings against William Paterson University on Tuesday.
 
Right-hander Lauren Shannon (jr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) was the winning pitcher in the first game and righty Jesse DeDomenico (jr. East Windsor, NJ/Hightstown) earned the save.  Shannon (7-2) gave up three hits and two unearned runs.  DeDomenico pitched the last two innings and did not allow any hits.  Lefty Caitlyn Massaro (so. Madison, NJ/Madison) had the loss (6-3).  At the plate, Massaro registered one hit and one RBI. 
 
Designated player Kelly Duffy (so. Sayreville, NJ/Sayreville War Mem.) contributed with a double and two RBIs.  Third baseman Cassandra Gerard (sr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) was three for three with one run.  Right fielder Rebecca Lombardo (so. New Egypt, NJ/New Egypt) had one hit and one RBI. Catcher Christina Guarino (so. West Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) and DeDomenico each scored a run.
 
The Profs scored two runs in the first inning. Duffy drove in DeDomenico and Gerard with a double to left center.  In the fourth, Lombardo had a base hit to right field, scoring Guarino.  The Pioneers' two runs came in the fifth. Right fielder Ryan Tighe (jr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) crossed the plate on an error.  Massaro plated center fielder Vanessa Archibold (jr. Saddle Brook, NJ/Saddle Brook) with a single.
 
DeDomenico had the win (7-4) on the mound in the second contest.  She also had three hits in four at bats and one run.  Left-hander Alex Grubiak (jr. Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge) suffered the loss (6-3).       
 
Rowan has a 16-6 record with a 4-0 mark in the New Jersey Athletic Conference.  William Paterson is 14-6 overall and 1-3 in the conference. 
 
Shortstop Carly Anderson (sr. Nutley, NJ/Nutley) totaled three hits, a double, one RBI and two runs.  Guarino collected two hits, a double and two RBIs.  First baseman Mackenzie Short (jr. Denton, MD/North Caroline) chipped in with two hits and one RBI.  Second baseman Sonia Sharma (so. Mahwah, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy) scored two runs and had one hit.  Center fielder Alexa Saccomanno (fr. Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon) produced one hit, one RBI and one run.
 
Rowan jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning. Anderson came home on an error and Guarino recorded a two RBI single.  Short singled in one run and Sharma scored on an error.  In the third inning, Sharma touched home plate on a wild pitch.  
 
William Paterson's run came in the fifth inning. Second baseman Andee Lupica (jr. Maywood, NJ/Immaculate Conception) drove in left fielder Janaya Espino (fr. Woodland Park, NJ/Passaic County Tech) with a single.  
 
The Profs scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth and ended the game earlier due to the eight-run rule.  Saccomanno had a RBI single and Anderson doubled in a run. Anderson later scored on an error.
 
Rowan is home again on Saturday, April 6 against New Jersey City University at 1 p.m.
