GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University softball team swept a doubleheader, 3-0 and 3-2 against Arcadia University on Thursday.
Right-hander
Jesse DeDomenico (jr. East Windsor, NJ/Hightstown) was the winning pitcher in the opener. She (11-5) only gave up four hits and had seven strikeouts. Righty Mary Pat Murray (jr. Bellmawr, NJ/Baptist Reg.) had the loss (11-3).
Designated player
Kelly Duffy (so. Sayreville, NJ/Sayreville War Mem.) contributed with two hits, a double and one RBI. Third baseman
Cassandra Gerard (sr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) chipped in with one hit and one RBI. Shortstop
Carly Anderson (sr. Nutley, NJ/Nutley) had a double and scored one run.
For Arcadia, right fielder Brooke Ward (so. Millsboro, DE/Sussex Technical) registered two hits and one double. Catcher Alexis Burge (so. Port Crane, NY/Chenango Forks) and left fielder Kristin Cancelliere (sr. Rocky Hill, CT/East Catholic) had one hit apiece.
Rowan went ahead 2-0 in the third inning. With one out, Anderson hit a double to right center and advanced to third on an error. She scored on a sac fly by Gerard. Duffy singled through the left side and DeDomenico came home. First baseman
Mackenzie Short (jr. Denton, MD/North Caroline) had the Profs' run in the fourth when she touched the plate and was called safe due to catcher obstruction.
In the nightcap, center fielder
Kristina Mueller (sr. Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) singled in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh. The Profs trailed 2-1 after six innings. Duffy reached base on an error and was replaced by pinch runner
Rebecca Lombardo (so. New Egypt, NJ/New Egypt). Left fielder
Morgan Zane (fr. Pittsgrove, NJ/A.P. Schalick) followed with a base hit to left center.
Shea Branda (jr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River E.) pinch ran for Zane.
Second baseman
Sonia Sharma (so. Mahwah, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy) moved the runners to third and second with a sac bunt. Pinch hitter
Korie Hague (fr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) recorded a sac fly, scoring Lombardo and Branda advanced to third. Pinch hitter
Alexa Saccomanno (fr. Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon) then walked. Mueller followed with a bunt single and Branda scored the winning run.
DeDomenico earned her second win on the day in relief. She (12-5) threw 1.1 innings and allowed just one hit. Right-hander Kylee Schwind (jr. Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) suffered the loss (8-6) on the mound.
Rowan and Arcadia each have a 22-10 overall record. In this week's NCAA East Region Rankings, the Profs are third and the Knights follow in fifth.
Anderson put Rowan up 1-0 in the first inning with a solo home run. Arcadia took the lead with two runs in the sixth. Shortstop Jackie Bilotti (sr. North Wales, PA/North Penn) singled home Cancelliere and first baseman Hunter Schantz (jr. Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) followed with a base hit that scored Bilotti.
Next, Rowan hosts Rutgers-Newark in a conference doubleheader on Saturday, April 20 at 1 p.m.
