ASTON, PA – The Rowan University baseball team held on for a 7-6 win at Neumann University on Tuesday.
Center fielder
Matt Woods (sr. Berlin, NJ/Eastern Reg.) and second baseman
Alex Kokos (jr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) each totaled three hits. Woods produced four runs batted in (RBI) and a home run. Kokos contributed a double and crossed home plate two times. Catcher
Steven Hewa (sr. Galloway, NJ/Absegami) and right fielder
Eric Schorr (jr. Audubon, NJ/Audubon) chipped in one hit, a RBI and one run. Schorr had a double.
Right-hander
Jeremy Dyzenhaus (jr. Morganville, NJ/Marlboro) was the winning pitcher (2-0). He tossed 7.1 innings, allowed nine hits, fours run and three earned and struck out two. Right-hander
Andrew Cartier (sr. Estell Manor, NJ/Buena Reg.) registered his sixth save on the season, throwing 0.1 frames and giving up one hit.
The Profs are 22-6 overall, while the Knights have a 12-16 record. Rowan is ranked fourth in the D3baseball.com/National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Top 25 and sixth in the American Baseball Coaches Association Poll.
For Neumann, center fielder Colin Pollard (so. Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley) registered three hits and four RBIs. Catcher Zach Ray (so. Voorhees, NJ/Eastern) and left fielder Danny Padilla (jr. Bristol Borough, PA/Bristol) each followed with two hits. Left-hander Phil Sanborn (so. Philadelphia, PA/Neumann-Goretti) had the loss on the mound, pitching 6.1 innings, allowing eight hits and three runs.
The Knights took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when third baseman John Schoelkopf (sr. Washington Twp., NJ/Washington Twp.)hit a sacrifice fly to center field and designated hitter Alex Layton (fr. Mays Landing, NJ/Cedar Creek) came home. Neumann doubled its advantage in the fifth as right fielder Marty Cortellessa (so. Northfield, NJ/Mainland Reg.)scored on shortstop John Lindeborn's (sr. Gloucester City, NJ/Gloucester) fly out.
Rowan cut the margin to one (2-1) in the sixth. Left fielder
Dan Shane (sr. Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) got on a base with a single and stole second. Woods brought home Shane with a RBI single up the middle.
The Profs took a 5-2 lead in the seventh. Kokos led off with a double to left center and was moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Hewa. Schorr knocked in Kokos when he doubled to right field to tie the score at two. The Brown and Gold went ahead after Woods ripped a three-run homer to left field.
The Profs extended its advantage to 7-2 in the eighth. Kokos reached first with a single through the left side. He then stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by Neumann's catcher. Hewa plated Kokos with a RBI single up the middle. Third baseman
Nick Schooley (so. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) drove in Hewa when he singled to right center. Neumann put the pressure on late adding two runs in the eighth and ninth innings to trail, 7-6.
The baseball team takes on New Jersey Athletic Conference foe The College of New Jersey on Wednesday, April 17, with first pitch set at 3:30 p.m.
