Baseball Edges Conference Rival The College Of New Jersey, 6-5

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team edged New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) foe The College of New Jersey (TCNJ), 6-5 on Wednesday afternoon. 
 
With the win, the Profs are 23-6 overall with a 9-2 conference record. The Lions have a 23-4 mark and are they 9-2 in the NJAC. Rowan is ranked fourth in the latest D3baseball.com/National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Top 25, while TCNJ sits seventh. In the American Baseball Coaches Association Poll, the Lions are fourth and the Brown and Gold hold the sixth spot. 
 
Right fielder Eric Schorr (jr. Audubon, NJ/Audubon) led the way with three hits and a double and scored twice. Center fielder Matt Woods (sr. Berlin, NJ/Eastern Reg.) and first baseman Mitch Walker (jr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) each contributed two hits. Woods had three runs batted in (RBI), a home run and a double. Walker chipped in two doubles and one RBI. Left fielder Dan Shane (sr. Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) crossed home plate twice and produced a triple and one RBI. 
 
Right-hander Dan Corvo (so. River Vale, NJ/Pascack Valley) was the winning pitcher (2-0), throwing 2.2 innings and allowing no hits. Righty Justin Smith (sr. Atco, NJ/Hammonton) pitched 5.1 frames and struck out five batters. Right-hander Andrew Cartier (sr. Estell Manor, NJ/Buena Reg.) earned his seventh save, hurling one inning and giving up two hits. 
 
For TCNJ, center fielder Thomas Persichetti (jr. Hamilton, NJ/Notre Dame) totaled two hits, a double and one run. First baseman Tommy McCarthy (sr. Allentown, NJ/Allentown) and second baseman Ryan Fischer (sr. Trenton, NJ/Robbinsville) added one hit, a RBI and one run apiece. Left-hander Andrew Rowan (sr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) suffered the loss (4-1), tossing 7.1 innings and allowing 11 hits, six runs and five earned. 
 
The Brown and Gold took a 5-4 advantage in the bottom half of the sixth. Shane had a RBI triple to right center. At the next at-bat, Woods sent Shane home with a double down the left line. The Profs added an insurance run in the eighth to lead, 6-4 on a bases loaded walk. 
 
The Lions put the pressure on in the ninth as they cut the deficit to 6-5 with a RBI single by McCarthy. With runners on first and third, the Profs' defense locked down and recorded a double play to end the game.
 
Rowan jumped out to a 2-0 advantage in the third when Woods blasted a two-run homer to left field. TCNJ answered in the top of the fourth adding three runs to go ahead, 3-2. Fischer and Giacose each had a RBI single up the middle, while shortstop Danny Borup (sr. Plainsboro, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro S.) brought Fischer home on a sacrifice fly to center field. 
 
The Profs tied the score at three in the fifth. Shortstop Dillon Mendel (sr. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) walked then stole second. Designated hitter Anthony Harrold (sr. Woodbury, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) drove in Mendel with a single through the left side. The Lions pulled out in front, 4-3 in the top of the sixth as catcher David Cardona III (jr. Elizabeth, NJ/Elizabeth) knocked in Borup on a fly out to center field. 
 
The baseball team travels to TCNJ to finish the two-game series on Thursday, April 18 at 3:30 p.m.
