WAYNE, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team split two games with William Paterson University on Saturday. The Profs won game one, 10-8 and lost the second contest, 11-6.
The Brown and Gold is 21-6 overall and 8-2 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. The Pioneers have an 18-10 record and 5-5 conference mark.
Center fielder
Matt Woods (sr. Berlin, NJ/Eastern Reg.) led Rowan in the opener with five hits, three runs batted in (RBI) and two home runs. Second baseman
Alex Kokos (jr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) produced three hits, a double and one RBI. Left fielder
Dan Shane (sr. Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) registered a homer. Righty
Andrew DiPiazza (sr. Bayville, NJ/Central Reg.) tossed 5.1 innings and fanned six batters. Right-hander
Zach Listro (jr. Swedesboro, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) earned the win (2-1), pitching 0.1 innings and striking out one. Lefty Doug Olcese (sr. Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) suffered the loss (1-1), throwing 1.1 innings and giving up three hits and two runs.
The Profs jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first when designated hitter
Anthony Harrold (sr. Woodbury, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) knocked in Woods with a double and Kokos had a RBI single. The Pioneers pulled ahead, 6-5 in the fifth when shortstop Greg Cuevas (so. West New York, NJ/St. Mary (Rutherford)) nailed a double to right field and left fielder Frankie Deane (so. Dumont, NJ/Dumont) came home. The score was tied in the sixth when Woods blasted a home run to left field.
The score was knotted at eight heading into the ninth inning. Shane blasted a two run homer to take a 10-8 advantage.
The Pioneers won in game two, 11-6. Center fielder Steven DiGirolamo (so. Dumont, NJ/Dumont) totaled three hits, one double and a RBI. Deane chipped in three hits and second baseman Matt Ferrara (jr. Paramus, NJ/Paramus) added two hits and three RBIs. Right-hander Jordan Manne (so. Mahwah, NJ/Mahwah) recorded the win on the mound (3-1), pitching 5.1 innings, allowing seven hits and six runs. Drew Ryback (jr. Mantua, NJ/Clearview Reg.) suffered the loss for the Profs (4-1).
For the Profs, Designated hitter
Mitch Walker (jr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) and Woods contributed two hits and one run apiece. Harrold had three RBI and one home run.
Rowan jumped ahead 3-0 in the opening frame with a three-run homer by Harrold. The Brown and Gold extended its lead to 6-1 in the second. Shortstop
Dillon Mendel (sr. Sparta, NJ/Sparta), Walker and Woods all had a RBI.
William Paterson battled back to reclaim a 9-6 advantage in the fifth. The Pioneers scored two more runs in the sixth to win the game by the eventual score.
Rowan travels to Neumann University on Tuesday, April 16 at 3:30 p.m.
