GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team cruised by Rutgers-Camden, 10-2 on Friday afternoon.
The Profs improve to 20-5 overall with a 7-1 New Jersey Athletic Conference record. The Scarlet Raptors have an 11-14 mark and are 3-5 in the conference.
Designated hitter
Mitch Walker (jr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) went four for five at the plate and scored four runs. Second baseman
Alex Kokos (jr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) contributed three hits, including a home run and four runs batted in (RBI). Center fielder
Matt Woods (sr. Berlin, NJ/Eastern Reg.) added two hits, a double and one run. Right fielder
Eric Schorr (jr. Audubon, NJ/Audubon) chipped in two triples and scored once.
Right-hander
Danny Serreino (sr. Jackson, NJ/Jackson Liberty) earned the win (2-2) on the mound, pitching seven innings and striking out 12 batters. Right-handers
Dan Corvo (so. River Vale, NJ/Pascack Valley) and
Zach Listro (jr. Swedesboro, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) each threw one inning and struck out two batters apiece.
For Rutgers-Camden, designated hitter Matt Yanick (jr. Palmyra, NJ/Palmyra) totaled two hits and one run. Third baseman John Guccione (jr. Hazlet, NJ/Raritan) added one hit, a RBI and a run. Right-hander Ian Scheidemann (sr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill W.) suffered the loss (5-1), tossing six innings and fanning seven batters.
The Brown and Gold jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first when Kokos drove in Walker with a single to left field. The score was tied at one when the Scarlet Raptors plated a run on a Rowan throwing error in the top of the third inning.
The Profs went ahead, 4-1 in the bottom half of the third. First baseman
Anthony Harrold (sr. Woodbury, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) knocked in two runs with a double to right center. Kokos followed with a single that brought in Harrold. Rowan extended its lead as it scored one run in the fourth and sixth innings for a 6-1 advantage.
The bats stayed hot for the Brown and Gold in the seventh as Harrold singled and Walker advanced home on a Rutgers-Camden's fielding error to lead, 7-1. Kokos kept things going when he blasted a two-run homer to left field. The Scarlet Raptors added a run in the eighth to trail, 9-2 as Guccione brought in Yanick with a single through the right side. The Profs scored its final run on the contest when pinch hitter
Nick Schooley (so. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) had a RBI single up the middle in the eighth.
The baseball team heads to William Paterson University for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 13 starting at 11:30 a.m.
