ASHLAND, VA – The Randolph-Macon College softball team won 1-0 over Rowan University in the first game of a doubleheader on Friday. The second game was suspended in the top of the third due to rain and will not be made up.
The Yellow Jackets are 5-2 on the season and the Profs have a 1-2 record. In this week's National Fastpitch Coaches Association Top-25 Poll, Rowan was ranked 12
th while Randolph-Macon was 22
nd.
In the opener, Randolph-Macon's winning run came in the fourth inning. Shortstop Savannah Wood (sr. Tappahannock, VA/Essex) reached base on an error and advanced to second on a sac bunt by designated player Brittany LaPrade (sr. Quinton, VA/New Kent). Wood went to third on a wild pitch and scored on second baseman Maddie Stone's (jr. Glen Allen, VA/Glen Allen) ground out.
Candace Whittemore (sr. Montpelier, VA/Patrick Henry) was the winning pitcher. She (3-1) struck out six batters and only gave up two hits. Right-hander
Jesse DeDomenico (jr. East Windsor, NJ/Hightstown) threw a no-hitter. She (0-2) allowed one unearned run and had three strikeouts.
The Profs' third baseman
Cassandra Gerard (sr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) had the only hits in the game. She was two for three at the plate.
Next, Rowan plays at William Peace University on Saturday, March 9 at 10:30 a.m. The Profs also have a game against North Carolina Wesleyan College at 12:30 p.m.
