Randolph-Macon Softball Wins 1-0 Over Rowan; Second Game Suspended

ASHLAND, VA – The Randolph-Macon College softball team won 1-0 over Rowan University in the first game of a doubleheader on Friday.  The second game was suspended in the top of the third due to rain and will not be made up.

The Yellow Jackets are 5-2 on the season and the Profs have a 1-2 record.  In this week's National Fastpitch Coaches Association Top-25 Poll, Rowan was ranked 12th while Randolph-Macon was 22nd.

In the opener, Randolph-Macon's winning run came in the fourth inning.  Shortstop Savannah Wood (sr. Tappahannock, VA/Essex) reached base on an error and advanced to second on a sac bunt by designated player Brittany LaPrade (sr. Quinton, VA/New Kent).  Wood went to third on a wild pitch and scored on second baseman Maddie Stone's (jr. Glen Allen, VA/Glen Allen) ground out.

Candace Whittemore (sr. Montpelier, VA/Patrick Henry) was the winning pitcher.  She (3-1) struck out six batters and only gave up two hits.  Right-hander Jesse DeDomenico (jr. East Windsor, NJ/Hightstown) threw a no-hitter.  She (0-2) allowed one unearned run and had three strikeouts.

The Profs' third baseman Cassandra Gerard (sr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) had the only hits in the game.  She was two for three at the plate.

Next, Rowan plays at William Peace University on Saturday, March 9 at 10:30 a.m.  The Profs also have a game against North Carolina Wesleyan College at 12:30 p.m.
