RALEIGH, NC – The Rowan University softball team defeated William Peace University, 5-3 on Saturday. North Carolina Wesleyan College had a 3-1 win over the Profs in the second game.
Against William Peace,
Lauren Shannon (jr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) was the winning pitcher. She (2-0) scattered four hits and gave up three runs, two earned. Shannon struck out seven batters. Left fielder
Morgan Zane (fr. Pittsgrove, NJ/A.P. Schalick) contributed with two hits (four at bats) and two RBIs. Designated player
Kelly Duffy (so. Sayreville, NJ/Sayreville War Mem.) had two hits in three at bats, one RBI and one run.
After four scoreless innings, Rowan hadfour runs in the top of the fifth. Shortstop
Carly Anderson (sr. Nutley, NJ/Nutley) led off with a single and later crossed the plate on an error. Duffy had a RBI single, scoring right fielder Jess DeDomenico (jr. East Windsor, NJ/Hightstown). Zane knocked in two runs with a base hit. Third baseman
Cassandra Gerard (sr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) and Duffy came home.
The Profs' final run came in the seventh. Catcher
Christina Guarino (so. West Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) scored on an error. In the bottom half, the Pacers had all three of their runs.
North Carolina Wesleyan got on the scoreboard first with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Rowan's lone run was in the top of the third inning. Gerard scored on an error. The Battling Bishops added one more run in the bottom of the third.
Gerard ended the game with two hits (three at bats). Anderson and Duffy each produced one hit.
