GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team came back to win the second game, 3-1 against Kean University on Saturday after dropping the opener, 12-2.
Right-hander
Andrew DiPiazza (sr. Bayville, NJ/Central Reg.) was the winning pitcher. He (3-0) threw seven innings and gave up three hits and one earned run. DiPiazza struck out 10 batters. Righty
Andrew Cartier (sr. Estell Manor, NJ/Buena Reg.) pitched the ninth and earned his fourth save. Tyler Hopman (jr. Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge) went the distance on the mound and suffered the loss (2-3).
Second baseman
Alex Kokos (jr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) was two for four with a double and one RBI. Center fielder
Matt Woods (sr. Berlin, NJ/Eastern Reg.) contributed with a home run. Third baseman
Nick Schooley (so. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) and catcher
Steven Hewa (sr. Galloway, NJ/Absegami) each added one hit and one run.
For Kean, designated hitter Zach Marzano (so. Edison, NJ/John P. Stevens) totaled three hits in four at bats and scored one run. Shortstop Brandon Johannessen (so. Roxbury, NJ/Morris Catholic) had one hit and one RBI.
The Cougars led 1-0 in the second after Johannessen reached base on a fielder's choice, scoring Marzano. The Profs went ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth. Woods led off with a solo shot to right center field. Kokos knocked in Schooley with a double down the left field line. Rowan added one more run in the seventh. With two outs, Hewa hit a double and scored on a wild pitch.
Rowan is 11-5 overall while Kean is 14-8 on the season. Both teams are 1-1 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference.
First baseman Nick Polizzano (jr. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) led the Cougars in the opener. He produced two hits, a home run, three RBIs and two runs. Marzano contributed with three hits, a double, two RBIs and one run. Second baseman John Carello (sr. Jackson, NJ/Jackson Mem.) totaled three hits, two RBIs and three runs.
Left-hander Frank LoGiudice (jr. Edison, NJ/John P. Stevens) was the winning pitcher. He (4-1) went 6.1 innings, scattered nine hits and allowed two runs. At the plate, LoGiudice had two hits, two RBIs and three runs. Right-hander
Danny Serreino (sr. Jackson, NJ/Jackson Liberty) took the loss (0-2).
For the Profs, Kokos tallied three hits, a double and one run. First baseman
Mitch Walker (jr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) registered a solo home run. Left fielder
Eric DiDomenico (fr. Blackwood, NJ/Paul VI) drove in a run and Woods had two hits.
Rowan travels to Arcadia University on Monday, April 1 for a 3:00 p.m. game.
