Bradley Baseball Betters Rowan, 3-0

WINTER HAVEN, FL – The Rowan University baseball team lost to Division I Bradley University, 3-0 in its final game of the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational on Saturday.

The Braves are now 11-6 on the season, while the Profs have a 7-4 record.

Bradley was led by shortstop Luke Shadid (jr. Peoria, IL/Notre Dame) with two hits. Center fielder Andy Shadid (sr. Peoria, IL/Notre Dame) produced one hit and two runs batted in (RBI). Catcher Keaton Rice (so. Geneseo, IL/Geneseo) and designated hitter Eli Rawlinson (so. St. John, FL/Creekside) chipped in one hit apiece, while right fielder Jean-Francois Garon (sr. Terrebonne, Quebec/College Laval) had a RBI.

Righty Brian Schrimmer (sr. Vernon Hills, IL/Vernon Hills) earned the win (1-0), pitching two innings and striking out three batters.

Right-hander Danny Serreino (sr. Jackson, NJ/Jackson Liberty) dominated on the mound for Rowan, tossing seven innings, fanning 12 batters and allowing three hits.  Righty Justin Smith (sr. Atco, NJ/Hammongton) took the loss (0-1). Second baseman Alex Kokos (jr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) and third baseman Bauer Fichter (fr. Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield Mem.) each had one hit.

The Rowan offense struggled early in the contest, at it could not manage to get a hit over the first three innings. Bradley put the pressure on in the third, as it loaded the bases with only one out. Serreino struck out the following batter and Rowan ended the inning on the next play with a fly out to left field.

The Braves opened the seventh with a double to right center from Rice. The Profs responded with back-to-back strikeouts from Serreino and a fly out to center field. The Brown and Gold picked up the pace in the bottom of the seventh when Kokos had a leadoff single and advanced to second on a Bradley throwing error. Kokos moved to third on a stolen base, but could not cross home plate as the Bradley pitcher fanned the next two batters.

Rowan slipped in the eighth as the Braves pulled ahead, 3-0. Shadid plated two on a single to left and Garon drove in the other run with a sacrifice fly. The Brown and Gold attempted to answer in the eighth on a two-out rally when Fichter singled to center but the Bradley defense stepped up and recorded the final out on the next at-bat.

The baseball team travels back to Glassboro for its first home contest on Tuesday, March 26 at 3:30 p.m.
