KISSIMMEE, FL – The Rowan University softball team went 1-1 on the final day at The Spring Games. Grinnell College edged the Profs, 5-4 in eight innings and Rowan shut out Endicott College, 7-0.
Left-hander Darice Wheeler (so. Evanston, IL/Cushing Academy) was the winning pitcher for Grinnell. She (1-3) scattered six hits and gave up four runs, one earned. Right-hander
Lauren Shannon (jr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) struck out eight batters in the loss (4-2).
Third baseman Ashley Wehrenberg (sr. Sacramento, CA/Pleasant Grove) led Grinnell with a home run and two RBIs. Center fielder Lelia Bishop-Parise (so. Reno, NV/Robert McQueen) and Wheeler each contributed with two hits and one RBI. Bishop-Parise also scored two runs.
For Rowan, designated player
Kelly Duffy (so. Sayreville, NJ/Sayreville War Mem.) and left fielder
Morgan Zane (fr. Pittsgrove, NJ/A.P. Schalick) had one hit and one RBI apiece. Shortstop
Carly Anderson (sr. Nutley, NJ/Nutley) produced two hits and one run. Third baseman
Cassandra Gerard (sr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) scored two times.
The Profs took the lead 3-1 after scoring two runs in the fourth inning and one in the fifth. Zane plated Gerard with a double to right center in the fourth. With Duffy at bat, Zane came home on an error. In the fifth, catcher
Christina Guarino (so. West Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) had a sacrifice fly, scoring Anderson.
The Pioneers tied the score with two runs in the top of the seventh. Wehrenberg recorded a two run homer to left field. Grinnell went ahead 5-3 in the eighth inning. Bishop-Parise drove in Seibert with a single to center field. With the bases loaded and two outs, Bishop-Parise crossed the plate on a wild pitch. Rowan scored one run in the bottom of the eighth. Duffy knocked in Gerard with a base hit.
Anderson went four for four with two doubles, one RBI and three runs against Endicott. Duffy compiled three hits, a double and three RBIs. Center fielder
Kristina Mueller (sr. Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) had two hits, two runs and two stolen bases. Gerard added two hits, one RBI and one run.
Right-hander
Jesse DeDomenico (jr. East Windsor, NJ/Hightstown) was the winning pitcher. She (5-4) only allowed two hits Maggie Oram (jr. Lexington, MA/Lexington) suffered the loss (2-1).
The Profs got on the scoreboard in the third inning. Anderson singled up the middle, scoring Mueller. Duffy's base hit through the left side, brought home Anderson. Rowan led 4-0 after the fifth inning. Mueller came home on an error and Gerard posted a RBI single. The Profs had three more runs in the seventh. Anderson touched home plate on an error and Duffy knocked in two runs with a double.
Next week, Rowan (10-6) travels to Neumann University on Wednesday, March 27 for a 3 p.m. double header.
