KISSIMMEE, FL – The Rowan University softball team shut out Springfield College, 8-0 in six innings and had a 1-0 loss against undefeated Tufts University on Tuesday.
Against Springfield, left fielder
Morgan Zane (fr. Pittsgrove, NJ/A.P. Schalick) and second baseman
Sonia Sharma (so. Mahwah, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy) each contributed with two hits, two RBIs and one run. Third baseman
Cassandra Gerard (sr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) had one hit and two RBIs. Shortstop
Carly Anderson (sr. Nutley, NJ/Nutley) scored two runs and added one RBI. Catcher
Christina Guarino (so. West Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) registered one RBI.
Right-hander
Jesse DeDomenico (jr. East Windsor, NJ/Hightstown) struck out 11 batters and only gave up two hits for the win. At the plate, she was one for three with two runs scored. Righty Marisa Valenti (jr. Trumbull, CT/Trumbull) took the loss.
The Profs scored two runs in the first inning and three in the second. Zane drove in Anderson and DeDomenico with a double in the first. Sharma crossed the plate on a fielder's choice in the third. Gerard knocked in pinch runner
Shea Branda (jr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River E.) and Anderson with a single through the left side.
Rowan added two more runs in the fifth. Sharma recorded a two-RBI triple, scoring right fielder
Rebecca Lombardo (so. New Egypt, NJ/New Egypt) and Zane. In the sixth, Guarino walked with the bases loaded and DeDomenico came home.
Tufts' (7-0) winning run came in the second inning. Third baseman Jamie Stevens (jr. Libertyville, IL/Libertyville) recorded a solo shot to left field.
Right-hander Kristi Van Meter (so. Amston, CT/RHAM) pitched a complete game. She (3-0) only allowed two hits and had 10 strikeouts. Righty
Lauren Shannon (jr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) suffered her first loss on the season. She (4-1) gave up three hits.
At the Spring Games, Rowan (7-5) plays Farmingdale State College on Wednesday, March 20 at 9:30 a.m. and Marian University (WI) at 11:45 a.m.
