AUBURNDALE, FL – The Rowan University baseball team scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to win 3-1 over the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse on Monday.
The Profs have a 4-2 record on the season, while the Eagles are 0-4.
First baseman
Anthony Harrold (sr. Woodbury, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) led Rowan with three hits, while center fielder
Matt Woods (sr. Berlin, NJ/Eastern Reg.) added two hits, one run batted in (RBI) and one run. Designated hitter
Mitch Walker (jr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) chipped in with one hit and two RBIs. Pinch hitter
Eric DiDomenico (fr. Blackwood, NJ/Paul IV) and left fielder
Michael Manganella (so. West Milford, NJ/Don Bosco Prep) had one hit apiece.
Right-hander
Justin Smith (sr. Atco, NJ/Hammonton) pitched seven innings and struck out six batters. Righty
Jean Sapini (so. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) earned the win, tossing one inning and not allowing a hit or a run. Right-hander
Andrew Cartier (sr. Estell Manor, NJ/Buena Reg.) closed the game in the ninth and recorded his second save on the season.
First baseman Mitch Sutton (sr. Mequon, WI/Homestead) contributed two hits for Wisconsin-La Crosse. Designated hitter Brennan Schmitt (jr. Middleton, WI), left fielder Shane Coker (jr. Athens, WI) and third baseman Jack Dwyer (jr. Milwaukee, WI/Marquette) each had one hit.
Right-hander Jack Mizgalski (so. Sycamore, WI/Sycamore) threw 7.1 innings, allowing five hits and striking out two. Righty Zach Pronschinske (jr. Arcadia, WI/Arcadia) pitched the eighth and recorded the loss.
Rowan dominated defensively over the first five innings, as it only allowed three runners to reach base. Wisconsin-La Crosse got on the board in the sixth to take a 1-0 lead. Pinch hitter Brendan Schmitt (jr. Middleton, WI/Middleton) singled to right field and scored shortstop Nate Heili (sr. Sheboygan Falls, WI/Sheboygan Falls).
The Profs battled back and took a 3-1 advantage in the eighth. Right fielder
Frankie Aiello (jr. Wyckoff, NJ/Ramapo) reached base on a hit by pitch then stole second. DiDomenico advanced Aiello to third when he singled to right field. On the following at-bat, Woods knocked in Aiello with a single to tie the game. The Profs took the lead when Walker smoked a triple down the right field line and brought in two runs.
The Brown and Gold locked down in the final inning as it earned the first two outs on a double play, followed by a strikeout from Cartier to end the game.
The Profs are back in action on Wednesday, March 20, when they challenge the University of Southern Maine at 2:15 p.m.
