GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University women's basketball team outscored William Paterson University, 24-6 in the final quarter to win 74-53 on Wednesday.
The Profs are 14-9 on the season and 12-4 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. The Pioneers are 12-11 overall and they have an 8-8 conference record.
Four players were in double digits for Rowan. Guard
Olivia Rulon (sr. Cape May Court House, NJ/Wildwood Catholic) led the way with 19 points. Guards
Alexis Kriley (so. Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) and
Dominique Peters (jr. Lawrenceville, NJ/Lawrence) each scored 15 points. Peters had 12 rebounds. Center
Ayanna Johnson (fr. Ewing, NJ/The Pennington School) recorded 10 points and 10 boards. She also contributed six assists and six blocks, which are both season-highs.
Guard CeCe Green (sr. Boonton, NJ/Boonton) scored 17 points and added four steals for William Paterson. Guard Julie Rovito (sr. Ridgefield Park, NJ/Ridgefield Park) produced 11 points, while guard Brianna Brooks (so. Saddle Brook, NJ/Saddle Brook) chipped in eight. Forward Carolyn Hill (sr. Martinsburg, WV/Spring Mills) registered six points and 11 rebounds.
Rowan held a 50-47 lead heading into the fourth quarter. The Pioneers cut the deficit to one (50-49) after a layup from Green at 9:36. The Profs went on an 18-0 run to pull away, 68-49 (3:21). Johnson scored five points in the surge, while Rulon and Peters tallied four apiece. Guard
Kennedy Brown (fr. Newark, DE/The Tatnall School) added three and Kriley had two. Rowan continued to dominate as it took its largest lead in the game of 21 (74-53) after Kriley sunk a pair of free throws (.51). Neither side would score for rest of the time as the Profs held onto the victory.
The Profs took an early 9-4 advantage in the opening quarter, after a layup from Johnson (6:57) and five straight points from guard
Nicole Byrne (sr. Brick, NJ/Brick Mem.). Rowan kept the pace up as it went on a 6-0 run to extend its lead to 15-4. Kriley started with a jumper (4:27), followed by a pair of layups from forward
Jenna Hoffner (jr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) and Johnson (3:16). The Pioneers tacked on three points at the end of the quarter to trail, 16-9.
The Brown and Gold maintained a steady lead over William Paterson in the second stanza. A three-pointer from Rulon at 6:51 gave the Profs a 28-14 advantage. The Pioneers chipped away at the lead when Rovito scored five consecutive points to trail, 32-23 (2:54). Rowan held its own and regained a 14 point advantage after Byrne converted two free throws (2:01) and Peters hit a jumper with 1:34 remaining. Forward
Jazlyn Duverglas (fr. Hammonton, NJ/Cedar Creek) scored on a pair of free throws to give the Profs a 41-29 lead heading into halftime. William Paterson came out hot in the third as it outscored Rowan 18-9 to cut the margin to three (50-47) going into the final quarter.
The women's basketball hosts Rutgers-Newark for its final regular season home game on Saturday, Feb. 9 at 7 p.m.
