Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Vandermark's Two Goals Help #18 Men's Soccer to 3-2 WIn over Rutgers-Newark

GLASSBORO, NJ – Freshman Jay Vandermark scored his second goal of the game with under three minutes to play to lift #18/25 Rowan (8-3-3; 4-2-1 NJAC) to a 3-2 win over Rutgers-Newark in NJAC men's soccer action at Rowan Soccer Stadium.

Vandermark headed in a corner kick from Michael Ferrara at 87:27, capping Rowan's rally from a two-goal deficit. It was his team-high 10th goal of the year and his third gamewinner.

Franco Cantania of Rutgers-Newark (5-9-1; 1-4-1) opened the scoring early at 12:12, fielding a cross from Miguel Sencion near the end line and putting the ball in from close range.

The Scarlet Raiders increased the lead to 2-0 when Cantania and Sencion teamed up again at 20:22. Cantania took a through ball from Sencion and connected on a shot from just outside the box.

Vandermark scored the Profs' first goal just 10 seconds later, blasting a shot from 25 yards out at 20:32.

Rowan tied it in the second half when freshman Chad Yates carried it into the box and crossed it to the left. Rutgers' goalkeeper Andres Medina got a hand on it, but Rowan's Matt Hendrickson was waiting at the post to put in the deflection at 64:59.

"We came out a little bit slow today and got caught early. And we did that the last game but today we were able to overcome it," said head coach Scott Baker. "When you're down two goals on a good team and you come back it's impressive. And when it's against an NJAC team, it's super impressive. I'm really happy the way the guys fought back. Any NJAC win is a big one and we'll take it."

Rowan held a 16-14 edge in shots with keeper James Weinberg making six saves. Medina had four stops in goal for Rutgers-Newark.

Rowan's next match will be in one week when the Profs visit Ramapo on Saturday, October 26.
