GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University women's basketball team scored 24 points in the final quarter to push past Kean University, 71-58 on Wednesday.
The Profs are 8-7 overall and 6-2 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. The Cougars now have a 6-9 record and a 3-5 conference mark.
Guard
Alexis Kriley (so. Fair Lawn, NJ, Fair Lawn) scored a game-high 21 points for Rowan. She also had four assists and four steals. Forward
Jenna Hoffner (jr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) added nine points and grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds. Guards
Grace Marshall (fr. Bellmawr, NJ/Haddon Twp.),
Kennedy Brown (fr. Newark, DE/The Tatnall School) and
Nicole Byrne (sr. Brick, NJ/Brick Mem.) each notched eight points. Brown totaled seven boards.
Kean was led by guard Shannon McCoy (fr. Barnegat, NJ/Barnegat) with 15 points and five rebounds. Guard Payce Lange (jr. Tewksbury, NJ/Voorhees) chipped in 12 points, while forward Cindy Foresta (jr. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) recorded a double-double on 10 points and 11 boards. Center Keidy Laureano (fr. Long Branch, NJ/Long Branch) registered 10 rebounds.
Rowan trailed by three, 50-47 at the start of the fourth quarter. After a jumper from Foresta, the Brown and Gold answered with a 10-0 run to take a 57-52 advantage. Kriley hit a jumper (9:12), followed by a three from forward
Paige Caldwell (so. Woodstown, NJ/Woodstown). Bryne ended the swing scoring the final five points on a trey and a jumper (5:47). The Profs kept the intensity high as they extended the lead to 11 (65-54) at 2:38. Rowan closed out the quarter strong converting six free throws, four from Kriley and two from forward
Kailyn Sytsma (jr. Northvale, NJ/Northern Valley Old Tappan) for the victory.
The Profs trailed after the first quarter 24-13. The Brown and Gold locked down defensively in the second stanza only allowing five points. Rowan used this momentum to slowly chip away at the deficit to tie the game at 29 heading into the break. The Profs scored the final seven points of the quarter with four points by Brown and a three-pointer from Byrne.
Each team was neck-and-neck as the score was tied three times in the third frame. Kean pulled ahead late when McCoy nailed a three-pointer with seven second left to have a 50-47 lead going into the final quarter.
The women's basketball team heads to Rutgers-Newark on Saturday, Jan. 12, with tipoff set at 6 p.m.
