GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University women's basketball team lost in a hard fought battle to Stockton University, 58-52 on Wednesday.
With the win, the Ospreys are 6-15 overall with a 3-11 New Jersey Athletic Conference mark. The Profs have a 13-8 record and are 11-3 in the conference.
Guard Molly Collins (fr. Lacey Twp., NJ/Donovan Catholic) led the way with 10 points. Guard Natalie Miller (so. New Milford, NJ/New Milford) and forward Raquel Harris-Scott (jr. Pine Hill, NJ/Overbrook) followed each with nine points. Harris-Scott had eight rebounds. Guards Emily Donzanti (fr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River S.) and Lajerah Wright (jr. Atlantic City, NJ/Atlantic City) scored eight points apiece. Donzanti grabbed eight rebounds and dished four assists.
For Rowan, guard
Dominique Peters (jr. Lawrenceville, NJ/Lawrence) had a double-double on 17 points and 11 rebounds. Guard
Olivia Rulon (sr. Cape May Court House, NJ/Wildwood Catholic) was next with 12 points, while guard
Kennedy Brown (fr. Newark, DE/The Tatnall School) notched seven points.
The Brown and Gold led 37-27 at the start of the third quarter. Stockton opened with an 11-2 run to trail by one (39-38) with 3:09 remaining. Harris-Scott scored five points, while Wright, Collins and Donzanti each added two. Rowan pulled ahead, 46-39 after Brown hit a jumper (1:05), forward
Jazlyn Duverglas (fr. Hammonton, NJ/Cedar Creek) converted a free throw (00:37) and guard
Nicole Byrne (sr. Brick, NJ/Brick Mem.) made a layup (00:24). Stockton tacked on four points at the end of the quarter to trail, 46-43 heading into the final quarter.
The Ospreys started the fourth by scoring five straight points to take a 48-46 advantage (8:56). After a layup from Peters to even the score, Stockton extended its lead to seven (55-48) at 2:39. Madison Noordeloos (so. Hawthorne, NJ/Hawthorne) added two points, Collins sunk three straight from the line and Harris-Scott made a jumper. Rowan retaliated as Peters scored on back-to-back layups to cut the deficit to 55-52 (1:01). Donzanti hit three free throws in the final seconds of the game to seal the victory.
Rowan battled it out against Stockton in the opening frame, as each side traded baskets for the first half of the quarter. The Profs jumped ahead, 11-7 after Rulon made two straight layups (3:32). Rulon stayed hot as she nailed a pair of threes to give the Brown and Gold a 17-12 advantage with 1:42 left. A layup by forward
Jenna Hoffner (jr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) at 1:09 gave the Profs a 19-12 lead heading into the second.
Rowan controlled the first half of the second quarter, as it built a 12 point advantage after guard
Alexis Kriley (so. Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) made a layup (7:48) and Peters converted two free throws at 7:20. The Brown and Gold had its largest lead of the game of 13 after Kriley added two points from the line (4:25). Rowan maintained a double-digit advantage (37-27) for the rest of the quarter going into halftime.
The women's basketball team travels to Montclair State University on Saturday, Feb. 2, with tipoff set at 3 p.m.
