GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University women's basketball team scored 31 points in the second quarter en route to an 81-62 win over Rutgers-Camden on Wednesday.
The Profs are 10-7 overall with an 8-2 record in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. The Scarlet Raptors have a 10-7 mark and they are 5-5 in the conference.
Guard
Nicole Byrne (sr. Brick, NJ/Brick Mem.) scored a career-high 20 points, including five three-pointers. Guard
Dominique Peters (jr. Lawrenceville, NJ/Lawrence) followed with 16 points and five assists, while guard
Alexis Kriley (so. Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) added 12 points and seven boards. Guard
Olivia Rulon (sr. Cape May Court House, NJ/Wildwood Catholic) notched 10 points and forward
Kailyn Sytsma (jr. Northvale, NJ/Northern Valley Old Tappan) chipped in seven points and eight rebounds. Center
Ayanna Johnson (fr. Ewing, NJ/The Pennington School) collected 15 boards and had three blocks.
For Rutgers-Camden, guard Wykira Johnson-Kelly (fr. Franklinville, NJ/Delsea Reg.) had a double-double on 20 points and 13 rebounds. Guard Shane Holmes (so. Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) produced 13 points and four steals, while guard Fatimah Williams (jr. Camden, NJ/Timber Creek) recorded 12 points.
The Profs trailed 19-15 at the start of the second quarter. The Brown and Gold took a 20-19 lead after Peters scored the first five points in the frame (9:14). The Scarlet Raptors answered with a 7-0 run to regain a six point advantage (26-20). Williams started the swing with a layup (8:50), followed by a free throw from Holmes (8:17) and a fast break layup from guard/forward Ariel Robinson (sr. Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic) at 8:05. Johnson-Kelly ended the run with layup with 7:30 remaining in the quarter. Rowan went on a hot streak when Byrne poured in the next 14 points to take a 34-26 lead (5:10). She drained three treys, hit two layups and a free throw. Rowan kept the intensity high as it built a 14-point advantage (46-32) heading into the halftime break.
Rowan kept the pace high in the third quarter putting up 23 points compared to Rutgers-Camden's 18. The Brown and Gold built a 23 point lead after Rulon hit a three to set the score at 64-41 (3:19). The Profs put the game away in the final frame as they maintained a steady lead and never allowed the Scarlet Raptors to get within single digits.
The Brown and Gold stumbled early in the opening stanza as Rutgers-Camden jumped out to a 5-0 lead. Williams made a three and Johnson-Kelly converted a layup. Rowan retaliated and took a 6-5 advantage when Kriley drilled three straight jumpers (6:56). The Scarlet Raptors had its largest lead in the quarter of seven (17-10) when guard/forward Tamara Johnson (fr. Newark, NJ/University) made a free throw with 1:58 left. Rowan cut the deficit to four at the end frame, when Peters made a layup (1:05) and Byrne drained a three (:05).
The women's basketball team takes on New Jersey City University at home on Saturday, Jan. 19 at 1 p.m.
