GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University men's basketball team started the second half of its conference schedule with a 105-76 win over Rutgers-Camden on Wednesday night.
The Profs recorded a school record 24 three-pointers. Rowan tied the mark of 18 threes last week against Kean University. Prior, the men's basketball team had 18 three-pointers in 1996 against York College (NY).
Six players were in double figures. Guard
Rob DePersia (sr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Haddonfield Mem.) was the scoring leader with 17 points and guard
DaRon Curry (sr. Deptford, NJ/Phelps School (PA)) followed with 14. Guard
Nick DePersia (sr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Haddonfield Mem.) and forwards
Austin Kearney (jr. Monroeville, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) and
Brian Thatcher (jr. North Port, FL/Charlotte) each contributed with 12 points. Kearney also grabbed seven rebounds.
Rob DePersia made five three-pointers while
Nick DePersia and Thatcher had four apiece.
Guard
Matt Green (so. Haddon Heights, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) chipped in with 10 points. Guard/forward
Ramon Wright (sr. Newark, NJ/Irvington) totaled 10 rebounds and seven assists. Guard
Ryan Legler (so. Stone Harbor, NJ/Wildwood Catholic) added nine points and four assists.
Rowan is 13-4 overall and 7-3 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. Rutgers-Camden drops to 2-15 overall and 2-8 in the conference.
For the Scarlet Raptors, guard Kyle Goodson Jr. (so. Penns Grove, NJ/Penns Grove) collected 16 points. Guard Terrance Harris (so. Burlington, NJ/Camden Catholic) scored 13 points while guard Ian McCarthy (so. Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic) had 10. Guard Trai Greer (sr. Sicklerville, NJ/Middle Twp.) produced seven rebounds and four assists.
The Profs started the second stanza with a 13 point advantage (49-36). Kearney's three at 14:54 made the score 61-44.
Rob DePersia had a three at 12:48, which increased the lead to 20 (66-46). The closest Rutgers-Camden came was 13 points (68-55) at 9:09 after a jumper by forward Chin Akwarandu (sr. Gloucester City, NJ/Gloucester City).
Nick DePersia (7:23), Legler (7:02) and
Nick DePersia (6:30) hit threes for a 26 point advantage (83-57). The Profs had 18 three-pointers then Thatcher broke the record with 6:10 left. Rowan's largest lead was 38 points (102-64) at 2:32 when Green sank a three-pointer. The Profs registered 14 three-pointers in the final period.
Rutgers-Camden jumped out to a 8-3 lead at 17:32 to start the first half. Rowan went ahead 12-8 (16:07) after three straight three-pointers, two by
Rob DePersia and one from Curry. Guard Adam Perry (fr. Westampton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) hit a three with 12:20 remaining and the Scarlet Raptors trailed 19-18. Rowan followed with 10 straight points, which made the score 29-18 at 8:53. Guard
Connor Dickerson (fr. Marlton, NJ/Moorestown) had five of the 10 points.
Legler drilled a three (7:49) to lead by 13 (34-21). Curry's three gave the Profs a 16 point advantage (39-23) at 5:16. Rutgers-Camden cut the deficit to 10 (46-36) with a three-pointer by McCarthy at the 33 second mark.
Nick DePersia answered with a three (0:06) to lead 49-36 at the intermission.
Rowan is home again on Saturday, Jan. 19 against New Jersey City University at 3 p.m.
