GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University men's soccer team shut out SUNY Old Westbury, 3-0 in the first round of the Gilmore Alumni Classic on Friday night.
It was a night of Kevin's for the Profs. Midfielder
Kevin Primich (jr. Hamilton, NJ/Allentown) led the way with two goals while midfielder
Kevin Pereira (sr. Allentown, NJ/Allentown) contributed with one goal and one assist. Midfielder
Mike Schoener (so. Jackson, NJ/Jackson Mem.) added an assist.
In the other first round game, Rutgers-Camden edged New York University, 3-2. On Saturday, Rowan plays New York University at 7:30 p.m. in the second round. Prior, SUNY Old Westbury meets Rutgers-Camden at 3 p.m.
Primich headed in a corner kick by Pereira at 32:07 for a 1-0 advantage at the half. The Profs took nine shots in the opening period and the Panthers did not have one. At 80:10, Primich blasted a shot from the far post into the net.
Old Westbury came close to spoiling the shutout with a blocked shot (88:04) by midfielder/forward Brian Lopez (fr. Hicksville, NY/Hicksville). Goalkeeper Dennis Kyle (sr. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) made an outstanding save (88:24) when he turned away midfielder Wilson Martinez's (sr. Huntington, NY/Huntington) shot.
Schoener hit Pereira with a pass across the box from the right side for the final marker with 1:01 on the clock. Rowan ended the game with 21 shots while Old Westbury had six. Goalie Mike Warren (sr. East Meadow, NY/East Meadow) turned away seven shots for the Panthers. Dennis ended the game with three saves.
