Softball Splits NJAC Doubleheader At Rutgers-Newark

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NEWARK, NJ – The Rowan University softball team split a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) doubleheader at Rutgers-Newark on Tuesday. The Scarlet Raiders won the first game, 2-0 and the Profs took the second, 7-0.
 
Right-hander Jesse DeDomenico (so. East Windsor, NJ/Hightstown) pitched a no-hitter in Rowan's victory.  She (14-4) struck out five batters.  It was her second no-hitter of her college career and fifth shutout this season. Morgan Walizer (sr. Forked River, NJ/Lacey Twp.) had the loss on the mound (4-2).
 
At the plate, DeDomenico contributed with two hits (three at bats), a double and two runs. Right fielder Morgan Smith (sr. Millsboro, DE/Sussex Central) and second baseman Sonia Sharma (fr. Mahwah, NJ/Immaculate Hear Academy) each collected two hits, two RBIs and one run.  First baseman Mckenzie Short (so. Denton, MD/North Caroline) added a double and one RBI.  
 
Designated player Christina Guarino (fr. West Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) chipped in with one hit and one RBI.  Catcher Nicole Paiotti (sr. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) had two hits and scored one run.  Center fielder Kristina Mueller (jr. Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) and third baseman Cassandra Gerard (jr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) scored one run apiece.
 
Rowan led 4-0 after the first inning.  Smith drove in DeDomenico with a base hit up the middle.  Sharma recorded a two-RBI single, scoring Smith and Gerard. Guarino sent Sharma home with a hit to right center.  The Profs had two more runs in the fourth and one in the fifth.  Mueller touched home on a single by Smith and DeDomenico crossed the plate on an error.  In the fifth, Short had a double to right center and Paiotti scored.
 
In the opener, right-hander Kelly Yusko (sr. Portage, PA/Penn Cambria) pitched a complete game shutout.  She (7-4) only gave up three hits.  Righty Lauren Shannon (so. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) suffered the loss (11-2). 
 
Walizer played third base in the first game and totaled three hits in three at bats and one double for Rutgers-Newark.  Right fielder Sarah Stiehler (so. Bloomsbury, NJ/Phillipsburg) contributed with two hits (two at bats), a double and one RBI.  First baseman Julie Contravo (fr. Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) added two hits.  Catcher Morgan Schweitzer (sr. Monroe, NJ/Monroe Twp.) and left fielder Brielle Mattiello (so. Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus) each scored one run.  
 
Rowan hosts Ramapo College on Saturday, April 28 at 1 p.m. in the final regular season doubleheader.  The New Jersey Athletic Conference Championship Tournament starts on Tuesday, May 1.
