Box Score 2 WAYNE, NJ – The Rowan University softball team swept a conference twinbill at William Paterson University, 2-1 and 9-1 in five innings on Saturday.
The Profs are 25-6-1 overall and 9-3 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. The Pioneers have a 19-11 record with a 6-6 conference mark. In the first NCAA East Region Rankings this week, Rowan was first while William Paterson followed third.
Right-hander
Lauren Shannon (so. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) was the winning pitcher in the opener. She (10-1) threw 4.2 innings and gave up four hits and one earned run.
Jesse DeDomenico (so. East Windsor, NJ/Hightstown) was on the mound for the final 2.1 innings and earned her first save. She struck out six batters and only allowed one hit. Pitcher Andee Lupica (so. Maywood, NJ/Immaculate Conception) had the loss (2-3)
Rowan scored in the fourth inning. With two outs, first baseman
Mackenzie Short (so. Denton, MD/North Caroline) knocked in both runs with a double to right center field. Catcher
Nicole Paiotti (sr. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) and second baseman
Sonia Sharma (fr. Mahwah, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy) crossed the plate. Paiotti had a single while Sharma reached base on a fielder's choice. William Paterson's run came in the fifth inning. First baseman Caitlyn Massaro (fr. Madison, NJ/Madison) hit a single to left field, scoring left fielder Kara Molnar (sr. Jackson, NJ/Jackson Mem.)
For the Profs, center fielder
Kristina Mueller (jr. Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) contributed with three hits in three at bats. Third baseman
Cassandra Gerard (jr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) collected two hits in four trips to the plate. DeDomenico registered a double.
DeDomenico has a 13-3 pitching record after the victory in the second contest. She allowed one hit and one unearned run while striking out nine batters. At the plate, DeDomenico totaled three hits (four at bats), a double, one RBI and two runs. Shortstop
Carly Anderson (jr. Nutley, NJ/Nutley) chipped in with two hits and four RBIs. Gerard had two hits, a double, one RBI and one run. Paiotti produced two RBIs while Sharma and Mueller posted two hits and two runs apiece.
Rowan was ahead 5-0 after three innings. In the fourth, DeDomenico scored on a wild pitch. The Pioneers scored their run in the bottom half. Center fielder Eleni Lutas (sr. Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock) came home on a wild pitch.
Rowan ended the game early due to the eight-run rule with three runs in the fifth. Sharma led off with a double to left field and Mueller followed with a base hit. They both scored on Anderson's single through the left side. DeDomenico had a RBI double.
Next, Rowan hosts Kean University on Sunday, April 22 in a noon conference doubleheader.
