Box Score 2 GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University softball team came back to win 3-1 in the second game against The College of New Jersey on Tuesday. The Lions edged the Profs, 3-2 in the opener of the doubleheader.
Rowan, ranked 18
th, is 17-6-1 overall and 3-3 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. TCNJ has a 17-5 record with a 5-1 conference mark.
Right-hander
Lauren Shannon (so. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) threw a complete game for the Profs' win in the nightcap. She (5-1) only gave up two hits and one unearned run. Sam Platt (sr. Cedar Grove, NJ/Mount Saint Dominic Academy) suffered the loss (4-3).
For the Profs, third baseman
Cassandra Gerard (jr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) totaled two hits (two at bats) and two RBIs. Right fielder
Morgan Smith (sr. Millsboro, DE/Sussex Central) chipped in with one hit and one RBI. Left fielder
Jesse DeDomenico (so. East Windsor, NJ/Hightstown) and center fielder
Kristina Mueller (jr. Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) each had one hit and scored one run.
TCNJ got on the scoreboard with one run in the top of the fourth inning and Rowan tied the score in the bottom half. Center fielder Gaby Bennett (jr. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) singled and catcher Jess McGuire (jr. Stockton, NJ/Hunterdon Central Reg.) scored for the Lions. DeDomenico crossed the plate on Gerard's base hit up the middle. Gianna Decker (jr. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) touched home on a fielder's choice with Smith at bat. Gerard followed with a bases loaded walk and Mueller scored.
Rookie Alanna Namit (fr. Mountainside, NJ/Governor Livingston) was the winning pitcher in the first contest. In 6.1 innings, she (8-0) scattered five hits, gave up two earned runs and struck out six batters. Eliza Sweet (fr. Shamong, NJ/Seneca) was the pitcher for the final two outs and earned her second save. DeDomenico had the loss on the mound (10-3).
In the top of the seventh, McGuire drove in the Lions' winning run with a single to left field. With two outs, first baseman Madison Levine (sr. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) had a base hit to left center and she went to second on a wild pitch. Pinch runner Elyse Nardozza (fr. Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley) replaced Levine. Nardozza scored on McGuire's base hit.
Rowan produced two runs in the third for a 2-1 lead. Shortstop
Carly Anderson (jr. Nutley, NJ/Nutley) led off with a double to left field and advanced to third on a sac bunt by DeDomenico. Smith recorded a homer to right center. It was her fifth home run on the year. Shortstop Megan Mayernik (so. Columbus, NJ/Northern Burlington Reg.) drove in the tying run in the fifth inning. She had a single to center field, scoring Bennett.
For the Lions, second baseman Annalise Suitovsky (so. Warren Twp., NJ/Watchung Hills) and third baseman Lauren Conroy (fr. Aberdeen, NJ/Matawan Reg.) each contributed with two hits. Bennett added two hits and scored two runs. Anderson totaled two hits in two at bats for the Profs.
Rowan travels to New Jersey City University on Saturday, April 14 for a 1 p.m. conference doubleheader.
