GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University men's basketball team knocked off undefeated Salisbury University, 97-76 on Saturday afternoon.
The Profs are 8-3 on the season with a four-game win streak while the Sea Gulls have a 9-1 record. Rowan had six players that were in double figures. Forward
Teirique Robinson (sr. Willingboro, NJ/Willingboro) scored a season-high 17 points while guards
DaRon Curry (sr. Deptford, NJ/Phelps School (PA)),
Nick DePersia (sr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Haddonfield Mem.) and
Connor Dickerson (fr. Marlton, NJ/Moorestown) all contributed with 13.
Guard/forward
Ramon Wright (sr. Newark, NJ/Irvington) grabbed a season best 12 rebounds. He also collected three steals, three blocks and two assists. Forward
Austin Kearney (jr. Monroeville, NJ/Gloucester County Christian) and guard
Rob DePersia (sr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Haddonfield Mem.) each collected 11 points and eight boards.
Rob DePersia also dished five assists.
Guard Mike Ward (so. Woodstock, MD/St. Paul's) recorded a game-high 29 points. Guard Johnny Fierstein (so. North Potomac, MD/Quince Orchard) produced 13 points and guard Gary Briddell (so. Salisbury, MD/Stephen Decatur) followed with 11. Center J.P. Krotulis (jr. Belmar, NJ/St. Rose) pulled down seven rebounds.
In the first half, Robinson started a 15-0 run with a layup and a foul shot at 16:58.
Rob DePersia ended the surge with two points at the line (19-8) with 13:40 remaining. Guard Ryan Leger's (so. Stone Harbor, NJ/Wildwood Catholic) three-pointer made the score 29-15 (10:55). Salisbury answered with a 17-4 spurt to cut the deficit to one (33-32) at 5:06. Ward drilled three threes in the run and Briddell had seven points. Kearney's layup (1:29) put the Profs ahead by nine (45-36). Ward sank two fouls (0:27) and forward
Marko Pantovic (so. Belgrade, Serbia/Zeumun) had two (0:01) to give Rowan an eight-point advantage at halftime (49-41).
Robinson's layup at the 12 minute mark in the second stanza gave the Profs a 19 point advantage (70-51). Rowan's biggest lead of the game was 20 points (82-62) after Curry's basket and free throw with 5:45 left. The closest Salisbury came for the remainder of the game was 15 points, the last time at 2:03 (91-76) after Fierstein's layup. Wright had two foul shots (1:56), Dickerson made one free throw (1:37) and
Nick DePersia hit a three-pointer (0:57) to end the game.
Next week, Rowan travels to Franklin & Marshall College for the Sponaugle New Year's Tournament on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 29 and 30. The Profs play Keene State College on Saturday at 1 p.m. and Delaware Valley University meets F&M at 3 p.m. The consolation is set for 1 p.m. on Sunday followed by the championship at 3 p.m.
