GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University volleyball team dropped both matches on the final day of the Rowan Quad, falling to Eastern University, 3-0 and the University of Scranton, 3-0 on Saturday.
Match One vs. Eastern University: 0-3 (14-25, 19-25, 15-25)
This match was highlighted by outside hitter
Erin Keegan (sr. Fairfield, NJ/West Essex Reg.) who claimed her 1,000th-career dig in the third set.
Rowan dropped three straight sets over Eastern in its first match on the day. The Profs fell behind early in the opening stanza, 9-1. The Brown and Gold fought back with a pair of two-point runs to trail, 17-9. Opposite hitter
Alexa Gasser (so. Broomall, PA/Villa Maria Academy) and middle hitter
Jamie Shirtz (sr. Mendham, NJ/West Morris Mendham) notched the first two points, before combining for a block. They were followed by a kill from opposite hitter
Kailey Gallagher (jr. Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne). Rowan could not overcome the deficit and lost the first set, 25-14.
The Profs started the next set by scoring the first two points to pull ahead over the Eagles. Shirtz registered a kill, followed by an Eastern error. The Brown and Gold slipped as Eastern pieced together six points to claim a 9-6 advantage. The Eagles earned their first two points from back-to-back errors by the Profs, followed by a kill from middle hitter Sarah Roberts (sr. Broomall, PA/Homeschooled) and outside hitter Ally Spillane (so. San Pedro, CA/Mary Star of the Sea). The Brown and Gold tied the set at nine, after a three-point swing. Keegan ignited the run with a kill, followed by an Eagles error and an ace from libero
Emma Cormican (so. Wallingford, PA/Strath Haven). Rowan fell behind and could not recover before losing, 25-19.
The Brown and Gold fell in the final set 25-15, to drop the match against Eastern.
Outside hitter
Megan Jacobi (jr. Nazareth, PA/ Nazareth Area) finished with five kills while middle hitter
Lauren Horbacewicz (so. Toms River, NJ/Toms River E.) and Gallagher each added four. Keegan led the back row with 16 digs and Cormican recorded 12.
Match Two vs. University of Scranton: 0-3 (22-25, 10-25, 17-25)
Both sides played a close set, as the first was decided late. The Royals posted the largest lead of the game, 23-16 after they scored five straight points. Outside hitter Kate Calabro (jr. Seaford, NY/Kellenberg Mem.) started the run with a kill followed by a Profs' error. The next three points were from middle hitter Eryn Boken (fr. South Pasadena, CA/Westridge School for Girls), a Rowan error and a kill from setter Kyra Bevenour (so. Sicklerville, NJ/Washington Twp.). The Brown and Gold made one final push to win the set but fell 25-22.
The Profs jumped out to a 6-3 advantage in the next frame. Setter
Tori Mock (so. Chadds Ford, PA/Archmere Academy (DE)) registered a kill, followed by a Scranton error and a kill from Jacobi. Rowan struggled for the rest of the set, losing 25-10. The Brown and Gold fell behind early in the final stanza and could not recover, as they dropped to the Royals, 25-17.
Gallagher amassed seven kills with a .350 hitting percentage, while Shirtz added five. Cormican and Keegan racked up nine digs apiece.
For Scranton, Calabro and Boken finished with 11 kills each. Bevenour dished out 34 assists.
The Rowan volleyball team travels to Rutgers-Camden on Tuesday, Oct. 9, with the match set to start at 7 p.m.
