GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University women's basketball team defeated Eastern University, 89-78 for its fourth straight win on Monday night.
Guard
Dominique Peters (so. Lawrenceville, NJ/Lawrence) led the way with a career-high 29 points. She was 11 for 16 from the floor with two three-pointers and five free throws. Peters also collected four rebounds, four steals and three assists. Guard/forward
Alex Raring (sr. Linwood, NJ/Mainland Reg.) contributed with 15 points.
Center
April Szymczyk (sr. Jackson, NJ/Jackson Liberty) and guard
Summer Crilley (sr. Galloway, NJ/Holy Spirit) each registered 13 points. Szymczyk grabbed nine rebounds while Crilley had eight. Guard
Olivia Rulon (jr. Cape May Court House, NJ/Wildwood Catholic) added 10 points.
The Profs are 10-5 overall while the Eagles drop to 4-11 on the season. For Eastern, guard/forward Brianna Young-Harris (so. Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman) recorded a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Guards Taylor Price (sr. Smyrna, DE/Smyrna) and Maya Harrris (so. Laurel, MD/Severn School) produced 14 and 13 points respectively. Guard Amanda Riiff (sr. Sicklerville, NJ/Timber Creek Reg.) scored 11 points and guard Taylor Azer (sr. Wilmington, DE/Concord) followed with 10. Guard Da'Naziah Brown (fr. Chester, PA/Archmere Academy) totaled eight points and nine boards.
In the first quarter, Peters hit back-to-back three-pointers to lead 20-12 with 2:52 remaining. Eastern closed the period with an 8-2 spurt to trail by two (22-20). Forward Viki Kneis (fr. West Chester, PA/Henderson) and Brown each contributed with three points and Azer had two. Raring put the Profs up by seven (35-28) at 6:16 in the second. She made a layup and a foul shot. With 1:05 on the clock, the Eagles pulled within six points (47-41) after Price's basket. Rulon nailed a three for a nine-point advantage (50-41) at the break. Raring totaled 11 points in the first half and Peters scored 10.
Eastern came back and tied the score at 52 in the third quarter. Price had the tying jumper (4:56). The Eagles led by one (59-58) at the end of the period after a 7-6 run. Riiff drilled a three while Brown and Young-Harris each had a basket. Rowan answered with an 11-2 rally to start the final period for an eight-point lead (69-61) at 6:27. Peters scored seven points and Crilley tallied four. Rulon's jumper at 4:02 made the score 77-66.
The Profs were up by 13 (83-70) after two free throws by Szymczyk (2:29). Peters made a basket and the score was 87-74 with 1:18 left. Young-Harris had two points at the line (0:25) and Rulon sank two foul shots (0:23) to end the game.
Next, Rowan travels to Stockton University on Wednesday, Jan. 17 for a 6 p.m. conference game.
