Rutgers-Newark Men's Basketball Upsets Rowan, 75-55

Box Score NEWARK, NJ – The Rutgers-Newark men's basketball team upset Rowan University, 75-55 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Saturday night.
 
Guard Quincy Rutherford (fr. Harrison, NJ/Eastern Christian) was the Scarlet Raiders' top scorer with 17 points.  Guard Chase Barneys (so. Woodbridge, NJ/Colonia) contributed with 15 points while guard Erick Loften-Harris (sr. Brooklyn, NY/Union) and forward Mark Thomas (jr. Newark, NJ/Marist) each chipped in with 13.  Guard Jordan Herrin (fr. Sicklerville, NJ/Winslow Twp.) grabbed nine rebounds and Thomas had seven.
 
Rutgers-Newark is 6-9 overall and 2-7 in the conference.  Rowan has an 8-8 record with a 4-5 NJAC mark. 
 
Guard DaRon Curry (jr. Deptford, NJ/Phelps School (PA)) scored 11 points for the Profs.  Forward TJ Booth (sr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) and guard Rob DePersia (jr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Haddonfield Mem.) had 10 points apiece.  Forward Ramon Wright (jr. East Orange, NJ/Irvington) collected eight points and seven boards.  Guard Nick DePersia (jr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Haddonfield Mem.) added six points and eight rebounds.
 
There were only three lead changes in the first half.  The last one came with 1:24 remaining after Curry put Rowan ahead 29-28 with a three-pointer. Wright followed with a dunk (0:39) and Loften-Harris cut the deficit to one with a layup (0:15).  The Profs led 31-30 at the break.
 
The Scarlet Raiders started the second stanza with an 11-1 spurt for a nine-point advantage (41-32) with 15:02 remaining.  Rutherford led the way with five points while Loften Harris followed with four and forward/center Dante Ralph (fr. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) had two.  Booth sank two foul shots (12:28) and the Profs trailed 43-38.  Rutgers-Newark scored nine straight points to lead by 16 (61-45) at the 5:45 mark.  Loften-Harris' two free throws (2:57) increased the lead to 20 (69-49).  He had two more points at the line (1:32) and Thomas had a layup (1:07) to end the game.
 
Rowan is on the road again on Wednesday, Jan. 17 at Stockton University for an 8 p.m. conference game.
