Women's Volleyball Picks Up Two Wins On First Day Of Profs Invitational

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University women's volleyball team won a pair of matches on the opening night of the Profs Invitational on Friday.
 
The Profs defeated Widener in a five-set thriller, 3-2 (25-19, 19-25, 25-23, 22-25, 15-13). Rowan later topped Dickinson College, 3-1 (26-24, 25-20, 21-25, 25-14) to improve to 2-4 on the season.
 
Against the Pride, outside hitter Megan Jacobi (so. Nazareth, PA/Nazareth Area) and middle hitter/opposite Jamie Shirtz (jr. Mendham, NJ/West Morris Mendham) each tallied 13 kills and outside hitter/opposite Kailey Gallagher (so. Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) followed with 12. Setters Katelyn Paxson (so. Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) and Tori Mock (fr. Chadds Ford, PA/Archmere Academy (DE)) recorded 29 and 18 assists respectively. Outside hitter/right side Kristin Akin (jr. Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon) registered five service aces and Mock added four. Middle hitter Erin Keegan (jr. Fairfield, NJ/West Essex), defensive specialist/libero Amy Staiber (so. Morton, PA/Ridley) and Paxson produced 17, 14 and 10 digs respectively. Middle hitter Lauren Horbacewicz (fr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River E.) had four blocks.
 
For Widener, outside hitter/right side Nicole Dorman (jr. East Norriton, PA/Pope John Paul II) posted 17 kills and 22 digs. Middle hitter Claire Kaufman (fr. Hanover, PA/Delone Catholic) registered 12 kills and outside hitter/middle hitter Natalie Winn (jr. San Marcos, CA/Mission Hills), middle hitter/right side Kelsey Lee (jr. Chesapeake, VA/Cape Henry) and outside hitter Carly Histing (sr. Sicklerville, NJ/Paul VI) each had 10. Setter Sydney Nichols (fr. New Holland, PA/Garden Spot) and defensive specialist/setter Liz Kwon (so. Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) contributed with 34 and 19 assists respectively. Libero/defensive specialist Ashley McAfee (so. Abington, PA/Archbishop Wood) chipped in with 13 digs while Winn and Dorman added four blocks apiece.
 
The score was tied at one in the final set when Rowan tallied three straight points on a kill by Gallagher and two Pride errors. The Profs were ahead 8-4 when Widener cut the deficit to one with a kill from Winn and two Rowan miscues. With the Profs up 11-10, outside hitter Taylor Modica (fr. Newark, DE/Appoquinimink) and Shirtz produced back-to-back kills and Paxson notched an ace to give Rowan a 14-10 advantage. The Pride staved off three match points before Gallagher gave the Profs the victory with a kill.
 
Gallagher and Jacobi tallied 11 and 10 kills respectively versus Dickinson. Paxson recorded 21 assists while Mock added 16. Keegan amassed 18 digs and Staiber followed with 16. Horbacewicz registered five blocks.
 
Red Devils' middle hitter Norma Jean Park (sr. Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) posted 11 kills and five blocks. Setters Kristin Allgaier (fr. Reston, VA/South Lakes) and Alex Berezan (so. Surrey, BC/Earl Marriott Secondary) totaled 22 and 14 assists respectively. Defensive specialist Tatiana Lopez (fr. Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Colegio Puertorriqueno de Ninas) contributed with 22 digs and defensive specialist Emeline Jones (sr. Hamilton, NY/Hamilton) had 13 digs.
 
The score was tied at 20 in the second set before Rowan rattled off five straight points to take a 2-0 lead. Gallagher had two kills, Horbacewicz and Jacobi produced one kill apiece and Dickinson had an error. After dropping the third set, the Profs were up 12-11 in the fourth. Rowan had nine consecutive points to take control. They capitalized on five errors by the Red Devils and received two kills from Jacobi and one each from Gallagher and Horbacewicz.
 
The women's volleyball team plays Keystone College at 10 a.m. and Gettysburg College at 2 p.m. to close the tournament on Saturday, Sept. 9.
