Box Score 2 GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University softball team swept Rutgers-Newark, 11-2 and 13-0 in a conference doubleheader on Thursday. Both games were five innings due to the eight-run rule.
After the nightcap, Rowan honored senior first baseman
Damariz Mercado (sr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield). The Profs are 31-5 overall and 12-4 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. The Scarlet Raiders drop to 15-21 on the season and 3-13 in the conference.
In the first game, center fielder
Gianna Genello (so. West Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) led Rowan with four hits in four at bats, one RBI, two runs and two stolen bases. Left fielder
Mia Baldassari (jr. Lake Hopatcong, NJ/Morris Knolls) contributed with three RBIs on two hits and scored two runs. Designated player
Morgan Smith (jr. Millsboro, DE/Sussex Central) chipped in with three hits (three at bats), one RBI and one run. Baldassari and Smith each posted a double.
Catcher
Nicole Paiotti (jr. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) and outfielder
Kristina Mueller (so. Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) produced two hits apiece. Paiotti had two RBIs while Mueller scored two runs. Mueller also tallied a double. First baseman

Carly Anderson (so. Nutley, NJ/Nutley) and second baseman
Gianna Decker (so. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) crossed the plate one time.
For Rutgers-Newark, first baseman Morgan Schweitzer (jr. Monroe, NJ/Monroe Twp.) collected two hits (three at bats) and one run. Center fielder Samantha Hoffman (so. Metuchen, NJ/Metuchen) and catcher Sam Held (jr. Maywood, NJ/Paramus Catholic) each produced a RBI.
Right-hander
Lauren Shannon (fr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) was the winning pitcher in both contests. She threw three innings in the opener and only gave up one hit. In the second game, Shannon (16-1) did not allow any hits in three frames.
Smith was two for four at the plate with three RBIs and one run. She recorded two doubles for 21 on the season, which broke the school record. The old mark was 19 and it was held by Melissa Comparri (1993), Casey Roselle (2011) and Alysa Romero (2015).
Genello chipped in with three more hits (three at bats), one RBI and two runs. Paiotti and Mercado totaled three hits apiece. Paiotti also scored three runs and had one RBI and a double. Mercado collected two RBIs and two runs. Mueller had two RBIs and two runs.
Rowan ends the regular season at Ramapo College on Saturday, April 29 at 1 p.m.
