Box Score 2 GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University softball team split a conference doubleheader against Montclair State University on Sunday. The Profs had a 6-0 shutout in the first game and the Red Hawks took the second, 3-2.
Rowan has a 20-2 record while Montclair State is 10-8 overall. It was the conference opener for both teams.
Right-hander
Jesse DeDomenico (fr. East Windsor, NJ/Hightstown) only allowed five hits in the complete game shutout. She struck out five batters. Pitcher Valentina Cucci (1-2) had the loss on the mound.
Catcher
Nicole Paiotti (jr. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) led the Profs with a home run and three RBIs. Designated player
Morgan Smith (jr. Millsboro, DE/Sussex Central) contributed with three hits (four at bats) and one RBI. Third baseman
Cassandra Gerard (so. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) posted three hits and scored one run. Left fielder
Mia Baldassari (jr. Lake Hopatcong, NJ/Morris Knolls) chipped in with two hits, a double, one RBI and one run.
First baseman
Damariz Mercado (sr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) registered three hits in three trips to the plate. Center fielder
Gianna Genello (so. West Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) added one RBI. Shortstop
Carly Anderson (so. Nutley, NJ/Nutley) and second baseman
Rachel Breuninger (so. Sparta, NJ/Lenape Valley Reg.) each scored one time.
For the Red Hawks, second baseman Kaylee Powers (fr. Newton, NJ/Pope John XXIII) and catcher/left fielder Victoria Gehring (so. Hopatcong, NJ/Hopatcong) each had two hits in three at bats.
Rowan led 2-0 after one run in the first and second innings. With one out, Baldassari hit a double to left center and she scored on Smith's base hit to center field. In the second, Anderson crossed the plate on an error with Genello at bat. Anderson started the frame with a single. The Profs scored four runs in the fifth. Paiotti recorded a three run homer that brought right fielder
Kristina Mueller (so. Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) and Gerard home. It was her second home run on the season. Baldassari plated Breuninger for the final run.
In the nightcap, Montclair State scored the winning run in the top of the seventh. Third baseman Elena Radesich (fr. White Plains, NY/Valhalla) reached on an error and right fielder Noel Hodgins (jr. Paramus, NJ/Paramus) crossed the plate.
Righty Nicole Majewski (fr. South Brunswick, NJ/South Brunswick) earned the win on the mound in relief. She (3-2) went 5.2 innings and allowed one unearned run on seven hits. DeDomenico suffered her first loss (9-1).
Hodgins ended the game with two hits and two runs. Cucci was three for four with one RBI. Shortstop Blake Saperstein (fr. Livingston, NJ/Livingston) had two hits (three at bats) and one run.
Genello tallied three hits in three at bats. Smith added two hits and scored one run. Paiotti and DeDomenico each produced one RBI. Mercado had two hits in three at bats.
Rowan got on the scoreboard first in the second inning. Paiotti doubled to center field and Smith scored. Smith led off with a double to right field. The Profs were ahead 2-0 after Genello came home on DeDomenico's single. The Red Hawks tied the score in the fifth inning. Hodgins scored on an error and Cucci drove in Saperstein with a single.
