Box Score 2 CAMDEN, NJ – The Rowan University softball team swept Rutgers-Camden, 8-0 in six innings and 8-1 on Tuesday afternoon.
The Profs are 29-3 on the season and 10-2 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC). The Scarlet Raptors drop to 12-17 overall and 4-7 in the conference.
Right-hander
Lauren Shannon (fr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) posted the shutout and only gave up two hits. She (14-0) had four strikeouts. Lefty Jessica Thompson (so. Pedricktown, NJ/Penn Grove) suffered the loss.
First baseman
Damariz Mercado (sr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) led Rowan with three hits (three at bats), three RBIs and three runs. Designated player
Morgan Smith (jr. Millsboro, DE/Sussex Central) contributed with two doubles, one RBI and one run.
Left fielder
Mia Baldassari (jr. Lake Hopatcong, NJ/Morris Knolls), third baseman
Cassandra Gerard (so. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) and shortstop
Carly Anderson (so. Nutley, NJ/Nutley) all chipped in with one RBI. Right fielder
Kristina Mueller (so. Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) scored two runs while catcher
Nicole Paiotti (jr. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) and center fielder
Gianna Decker (so. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) each had one run.
The Profs got on the scoreboard with four runs in the second inning. Mercado drove in Paiotti and Decker with a single to center field. Baldassari plated Mueller with a base hit and Smith walked with the bases loaded, scoring Mercado. Gerard registered a RBI single in the fourth and Mercado scored.
Rowan added two more runs in the fifth inning. Mercado's base hit to right field brought Mueller home. Genello reached base on an error and Mercado crossed the plate. The game ended early because of the eight run rule. Smith led off the sixth with a double down the left field line and she scored on Anderson's single to center field.
Smith produced four hits, three doubles and four RBIs in the second contest. Baldassari tallied three hits, one double, three RBIs and one run. Decker recorded a home run. Center fielder
Gianna Genello (so. West Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) had two hits and scored three runs. Mueller totaled three hits in three at bats and two runs.
Right-hander
Ashley Lesch (jr. Rockaway, NJ/Morris Knolls) was the winning pitcher. She (5-1) only allowed one run on six hits. Righty Dannie Dinsfriend (so. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) had the loss on the mound.
For Rutgers-Camden, shortstop Rachel Edwards (fr. Washington Twp., NJ/Washington Twp.) was two for three at the plate with one RBI. Right fielder Allie Jenkins (so. Delanco, NJ/Riverside) had two hits and one run.
Rowan was ahead 4-0 after one run in the first inning and three in the second. Smith singled in the first and Genello came home. In the second, Baldassari knocked in two runs with a single to center field. Anderson and Mueller scored. Genello touched the plate on Smith's double to right field.
Baldassari posted another RBI single in the fourth, scoring Genello. Both teams had one run in the sixth inning. Smith hit a double to center field and Baldassari scored. In the bottom half, Jenkins crossed the plate on Edwards' base hit to center field. Decker recorded a solo shot in the seventh. It was her second home run on the season. Smith posted a sac fly and Mueller scored the final run.
