Box Score 2 GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University softball team swept Haverford College, 3-1 and 13-1 in five innings on Thursday in the home opener.
The Profs have a 19-1 record and they are ranked sixth this week in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association Top 25 Poll. The Fords are 4-10 on the season.
In the first game, left fielder
Mia Baldassari (jr. Lake Hopatcong, NJ/Morris Knolls) put Rowan up 3-1 with a two RBI double in the bottom of the fifth inning. She ended the game with two hits in three at bats. Third baseman
Cassandra Gerard (so. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) contributed with one RBI. Shortstop
Rachel Breuninger (so. Sparta, NJ/Lenape Valley Reg.) and first baseman
Damariz Mercado (sr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) each scored one run. Mercado also had a double.
Right-hander
Jesse DeDomenico (fr. East Windsor, NJ/Hightstown) was the winning pitcher. She (8-0) gave up four hits and one unearned run. At the plate, DeDomenico was one for three with one run scored. Pitcher Temma Levis (fr. Bronx, NY/Ethical Culture Fieldston School) took the loss.
After three scoreless innings, the Profs got on the scoreboard in the fourth. With one out, DeDomenico singled to center field and she advanced to third on designated player
Morgan Smith's (jr. Millsboro, DE/Sussex Central) base hit to right field. Gerard recorded a sac fly, scoring DeDomenico.
The Fords tied the score in the top of the fifth. Levis crossed the plate on a ground out by right fielder Briana Quinn (fr. Philadelphia, PA/Merion Mercer Academy). In the bottom half, Breuninger led off with a single to center field. Mercado hit a double and Breuninger went to third. Baldassari drove in Breuninger and Mercado with a double to center field.
Right-hander
Lauren Shannon (fr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) had the win on the mound in the second contest. She (8-0) only allowed three hits and one earned run. Kendall Chambers (sr. Rocklin, CA/Rocklin) was the losing pitcher. Shortstop Rachel Wolfson (so. Blue Bell, PA/Germantown Academy) produced a home run for Haverford.
Baldassari totaled four RBIs with two hits, a double and a triple and scored one run. Gerard contributed with two hits (two bats), a double, three RBIs and two runs. Smith chipped in with two hits and two runs. She posted a two-run homer in the fourth inning. It was her fourth home run on the season.
Catcher
Nicole Paiotti (jr. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) was two for three at the plate with one RBI and one run. Mercado added two hits and one run. DeDomenico and Breuninger each scored two times. Center fielder
Gianna Genello (so. West Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) and second baseman
Gianna Decker (so. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) had one RBI and one run apiece.
Rowan starts its conference schedule at home on Saturday, April 1 against Montclair State University at 1 p.m.
