GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University women's basketball team ended the regular season with a 90-63 win over Ramapo College on Wednesday.
The Profs are seeded fourth in the New Jersey Athletic Conference Championship Tournament and host the fifth seed William Paterson University on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 1 p.m. in the first round. Rowan has a 17-8 record with an 11-7 final conference mark. Ramapo is 10-15 overall and 5-13 in the NJAC.
The Profs honored their senior guards
Anyssa Sanchez (sr. Pine Hill, NJ/Sterling),
Valerie Garofalo (sr. Ventnor, NJ/Holy Spirit) and
Mandy Jiang (sr. Kearny, NJ/Kearny) before the game. Sanchez paced the team with 22 points, 10 rebounds and six steals. Garofalo chipped in with nine points and four assists.
Guard
Olivia Rulon (so. Cape May Court House, NJ/Wildwood Catholic) totaled 18 points with six three-pointers. Guard/forward
Alex Raring (jr. Linwood, NJ/Mainland Reg.) collected 16 points and six boards. Guard
Alexis Kriley (fr. Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) added 10 points off the bench.
For the Roadrunners, forward Jenna Harsh (fr. Metuchen, NJ/Bishop Ahr) scored 15 points and had six rebounds. Forward Tia Solomon (so. Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 boards. Forward Bintou Berete (sr. Teaneck, NJ/Teaneck) tallied 10 points and six rebounds while guard Samantha Rinaldi (fr. Ridgefield Park, NJ/Ridgefield Park) had seven points.
Rowan started the game with eight straight points, four from Sanchez and Garofalo in 3:55. Harsh's foul shot at 2:52 made the score 13-6. The Profs led by 14 (20-6) at the end of the quarter after seven unanswered points by Raring. The Roadrunners trailed by 10 (20-10) with 9:01 left in the second stanza. Jiang hit a three (8:50) and Sanchez followed with two layups (8:39, 8:19), which increased the advantage to 17 (27-10). Sanchez's basket at 5:24 made the score 34-16. With 3:34 on the clock, Rulon nailed a three and the Profs were up 37-20. Berete made two free throws (1:54) and a layup (1:20) to cut the deficit to 11 (37-26). Raring's layup gave Rowan a 13-point advantage (39-26) at the break.
With 2:13 remaining in the third, Rowan ended the period with a 14-0 run. Kriley and Rulon scored six points apiece and guard
Summer Crilley (jr. Galloway, NJ/Holy Spirit) had two. Rulon drilled four three-pointers in the period. Rowan's biggest lead of the game was 39 points, twice in the final quarter. The first time came at 6:47 (87-48) after a basket by Kriley. Sanchez's layup at 6:17 made the score 89-50.
