Men's Basketball Defeats Host Rutgers-Newark, 86-73

Box Score NEWARK, NJ  – The Rowan University men's basketball team defeated host Rutgers-Newark, 86-73 on Saturday night.
 
Forward Shawn Wilson (sr. Pleasantville, NJ/Pleasantville) led the way with 27 points.  Guard Rob DePersia (so. Cherry Hill, NJ/Haddonfield Mem.) contributed with 15 points and five assists.  Forward TJ Booth (jr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) scored 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds off the bench.  Guards Nick DePersia (so. Cherry Hill NJ/Haddonfield Mem.) and Jeff Haddock (fr. Burlington, NJ/Willingboro) each chipped in with nine points while guard DaRon Curry (so. Deptford, NJ/Phelps School (PA)) added six.
 
The Profs are 16-8 overall and 11-6 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference.  The Scarlet Raiders have a 7-17 record and a 6-11 conference mark.
 
Guard Chase Barneys (fr. Woodbridge, NJ/Colonia) scored 20 points for Rutgers-Newark.  Forwards Mark Thomas (so. Newark, NJ/Marist) and Landon Gaines (fr. Paterson, NJ/Paramus Catholic) totaled 16 and 15 points respectively.  All three players pulled down eight boards.  Forward Jared Pearson (jr. Woodbridge, NJ/Woodbridge) collected 12 points and seven rebounds. 
 
Rutgers-Newark started the game with a 7-1 run in 2:35.  Gaines' three made the score 13-7 with 15:04 remaining.  Rowan pulled within two (13-11) after two foul shots by Wilson (14:32) and Curry's two points at the line (12:40).  Pearson had a layup (10:17), which increased the Scarlet Raiders' lead to four (19-15).  The Profs went ahead 22-19 at 8:14 after seven straight points.  Haddock contributed with four points and Wilson had three.  Pearson took the lead back 24-22 (6:57) with five unanswered points.  Rowan registered nine of the next 10 points for a six-point advantage (31-25) with 2:55 left.  Guard Mike Vick (fr. Maplewood, NJ/East Brunswick) sank two free throws at the three-second mark and Rutgers-Newark trailed 36-34.  Wilson drilled a three-pointer from half court as time expired and Rowan had a five-point advantage at the break.
 
Barneys hit a jumper at 17:37 in the second half and the Scarlet Raiders were down by four (44-40).  The Profs followed with an 8-0 spurt, which made the score 52-40 with 16:34 left.  Rob DePersia registered five points and Nick DePersia had a three-pointer.  At 11:58, Nick DePersia made a basket and foul shot to lead by nine (62-53).  Wilson gave the Profs a 14-point margin (71-57) with a layup (10:23) and a three (9:25).  Rutgers-Newark pulled with nine (82-73) after a three-pointer by Barneys with 1:36 on the clock.  Rowan ended the game with four free throws, two by Booth (1:30) and two from Rob DePersia (0:21).     
      
Next week, Rowan hosts Ramapo College on Wednesday, Feb. 15 at 8 p.m. in the final game of the regular season.
