Four Student-Athletes Named NJAC Players of the Week

PITMAN, NJ – Four Rowan University student-athletes received New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) weekly honors for the period ending October 29.

Kevin Veltre (sr. Brick, NJ/Brick Mem.) was chosen the Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week for the fourth time. Forward Shane Doherty (jr. Delran, NJ/Delran) earned his second Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week honor. John Tepper (sr. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Atlantic County Institute of Technology) and Gabby Gligor (jr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) garnered Men's and Women's Swimmer of the Week accolades respectively.

Veltre captured the individual title at the NJAC Championships (Oct. 28). He finished the 8K course in 24:38, 52 seconds ahead of the second place runner. Behind Veltre's lead, Rowan ended TCNJ's 23-year reign as conference champions as the Profs took their first team title since 1993. For his efforts, Veltre was also recognized as the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association National Athlete of the Week for Division III. The conference title was his third individual win of the season, as he also won the Inter-Regional Border Battle and Mike Woods Invitational earlier this year.

Doherty posted a six-point effort in the Profs' 8-2 win over TCNJ (Oct. 25) to lock up the top seed in the NJAC Championship Tournament. He tallied two goals and two assists in the victory, with his first goal chosen as the #8 play on SportsCenter's Top 10. Doherty wrapped up the regular season as the NJAC's top scorer in conference-only play. He racked up 22 points on eight goals and six assists against NJAC competition and is up to 37 points on 14 goals and nine assists overall this season.

Tepper becomes the second Prof in as many weeks to earn NJAC Swimmer of the Week honors after helping Rowan to two wins against Division II opponents. The Profs defeated Pace University, 143-90 (Oct. 27) and the University of Bridgeport, 137-122 (Oct. 28). Tepper swam the 100 and 200 freestyles against Pace, clocking times of 48.59 and 1:47.40 respectively. His 200 free time is the best in the NJAC so far this season and his 100 free time ranks sixth in the conference. Tepper swam distance events against Bridgeport, including the 500 freestyle (4:52.85) and 1650 freestyle (16:41.46), which rank second and first in the NJAC, respectively.

Gligor becomes the second Prof in two weeks to earn NJAC Swimmer of the Week honors after leading Rowan against a pair of Division II teams last week. She swam the 50 freestyle (26.07), 200 butterfly (2:18.60) and 400 medley relay (4:09.31) in a 149-94 setback to Pace University (Oct. 27), placing second in all three events. Gligor won two events to help propel the Profs to a 146-106 win over the University of Bridgeport (Oct. 28), capturing wins in both the 100 and 200 butterflies. She clocked a 59.75 in the 100 fly and 2:15.35 in the 200, which was the best in the conference so far this season. Gligor now owns the conference's top times in both the 100 and 200 butterfly events.
