NCAA Replay of Game
SALEM, VA – The Rowan University softball team had a 7-4 win over Emory University on the third day of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament on Saturday afternoon.
The Profs (42-10) play again on Saturday against Messiah College (46-4) at 6:30 p.m. The Falcons defeated the Profs, 9-6 in the opening round of the national tournament.
Rookie
MacKenzie Juodaitis (fr. Cheshire, CT/Cheshire) threw 5.2 innings for the victory. She is 9-2 on the season.
Allison Nolan (sr. Middletown, NJ/Middletown S.) earned her fifth save. She did not allow a hit or a run in 1.1 innings. Pitcher Brittany File (jr. Carmel, CA/Carmel) had the loss. In three innings, File (36-6) gave up four hits and six runs, three earned.
With the victory, Rowan broke the school record for most wins (41) in a season. Designated player
Ashley DeYoung (jr. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) produced a two-run homer. First baseman
Damariz Mercado (jr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) contributed with a double and two RBIs. Center fielder
Gianna Genello (fr. West Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) had one hit and scored two runs.
Right fielder
Morgan Smith (so. Millsboro, DE/Sussex Central) added one RBI and one run. Pinch hitter
Amanda Parker (so. Midland Park, NJ/Midland Park) chipped in with a hit and one RBI. Second baseman
Carly Anderson (fr. Nutley, NJ/Nutley) had one RBI.
For the Eagles, first baseman Ashley Powers (so. Fayetteville, GA/Starr's Mill) was three for four with two doubles. Second baseman Janelle Turnquest (so. Austin, TX/Westlake) registered one hit and two RBIs. Center fielder Alyssa Pollard (sr. Knoxville, TN/Christian Academy) collected two hits, one RBI and one run. Left fielder Taylor Forte (jr. Pleasantville, NY/Rye Country Day) and designated player Jenna Wilson (fr. Malvern, PA/Conestoga) had one hit and one run apiece.
Rowan scored three runs in the third inning to go ahead 5-2. Baldassari had a walk and DeYoung followed with a single through the left side. Pinch runner
Rosalie Hood (so. Egg Harbor City, NJ/Cedar Creek) took over at first for DeYoung. Smith reached on an error to load the bases. Anderson registered a sacrifice fly, scoring Baldassari. Mercado's hit dropped into right field for a double, scoring Hood and Smith.
In the fourth, Genello reached on a fielder's choice and Snead had a single. With one out, DeYoung walked and the bases were loaded. Smith also had a walk and Genello came home for a 6-2 advantage.
Emory cut the deficit to two with two runs in the sixth inning. Pinch runner Raygan Greer (so. Brentwood, TN/Ravenwood) crossed the plate on an error. She replaced Powers who had a double. Pollard posted a RBI base hit that scored Wilson. Rowan added an insurance run in the bottom half. Parker singled up the middle and Genello scored.
In the first inning, the Eagles had a two RBI single by Turnquest. DeYoung tied the score with a two-run homer to right center. She has 12 home runs on the season, which is the school record. Snead scored on the home run after she walked and stole second.
This is Rowan's fifth trip to the national championship tournament. The Profs took fourth place in 1993 and 1994. Rowan was an automatic qualifier for the national tournament as the New Jersey Athletic Conference Champion. The Profs have advanced to the NCAA postseason six straight years and 24 times overall.
