SALEM, VA – The Rowan University softball team finished third at the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament after a 9-1 loss against Messiah College on Saturday night.
Earlier in the day, the Profs defeated Emory University, 7-4. Rowan ends the season with a 42-11 record. The 42 wins is a new school mark The Falcons are 47-4 overall and they will play in the final round on Monday, May 30. This was Rowan's fifth trip to the national championship tournament.
Right-hander Courtney Allen (sr. Lancaster, PA/Conestoga Valley) was the winning pitcher. She (27-1) went 4.1 innings and only allowed four hits and one run. Starter
Allison Nolan (sr. Middletown, NJ/Middletown S.) took the loss.
First baseman Erin Cressman (fr. Stow, MA/Nashoba Reg.) contributed with two hits, a home run, four RBIs and two runs. Center fielder/right fielder Amber Bingaman (so. Elizabethville, PA/Upper Dauphin) and third baseman Brooke Pompeo (sr. Williamsport, PA/Williamsport) each had two RBIs. Shortstop Amanda Jones (jr. York, PA/Dallastown Area) went three for four and scored two runs. Catcher Becky Notte (sr. Oxford, PA/Caravel Academy) and left fielder Carrie Fix (so. York, PA/York Catholic) had one hit and on run apiece.

Shilah Snead (sr. Malaga, NJ/Delsea Reg.) registered one hit and one RBI. She was named to the All-Tournament Team along with designated player
Ashley DeYoung (jr. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills). Center fielder
Gianna Genello (fr. West Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) tallied one hit and scored the run. Right fielder
Morgan Smith (so. Millsboro, DE/Sussex Central) and left fielder
Mia Baldassari (so. Lake Hopatcong, NJ/Morris Knolls) each had one hit.
Messiah got on the scoreboard in the second inning with a RBI single to left field by right fielder Shannon Denny (so. Raleigh, NC/Needham B. Broughton). Cressman recorded a three-run homer to right center in the third for a 4-0 lead. Allen and Notte scored on the home run. Rowan's run came in the fifth inning. With one out, Genello singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Snead plated Genello with a base hit up the middle. In the sixth inning, Pompeo recorded a two-run shot and Cressman ended the game early with a RBI single through the left side, scoring Allen.
Rowan was an automatic qualifier for the national tournament as the New Jersey Athletic Conference Champion. The Profs have advanced to the NCAA postseason six straight years and 24 times overall.
The NCAA Championship Tournament schedule and results are below. The schedule was revised for Saturday because of the weather forecast.
