Messiah Softball Wins 9-6 Over Rowan In First Game At NCAA Championship

SALEM, VA – The Messiah College softball team won 9-6 over Rowan University at the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament on Thursday night.  The national championships continue Friday-Monday, May 27-31 at the Moyers Sports Complex.
 
Rowan (40-10) plays Illinois Wesleyan University (35-12) on Friday at 1:30 p.m.  MIT defeated Illinois Wesleyan University, 2-0 in the opening round.  Messiah (45-4) meets MIT (34-12) at 4 p.m.  The final round of the double elimination tournament is a best of three-games.
 
Right-hander Madelyn Yannetti (fr. Gettysburg, PA/Gettysburg) was the winning pitcher in relief.  She (10-1) threw 3.1 scoreless innings and only allowed one hit.  Allison Nolan (sr. Middletown, NJ/Middletown) had the loss on the mound.   
 
Pitcher/designated player Courtney Allen (sr. Lancaster, PA/Conestoga Valley) and catcher Becky Notte (sr. Oxford, PA/Caravel Academy) each contributed with two hits and two RBIs.  Third baseman Brooke Pompeo (sr. Williamsport, PA/Williamsport) totaled two hits, one RBI and one run.  Left fielder Carrie Fix (so. York, PA/York Catholic) added two hits, one RBI and two runs.  Shortstop Amanda Jones (jr. York, PA/Dallastown Area), first baseman Erin Cressman (fr. Stow, MA/Nashoba Reg.) and Yannetti each chipped in with one RBI.
 
For the Profs, shortstop Shilah Snead (sr. Malaga, NJ/Delsea Reg.) went two for three with a double, one RBI and one run.  Designated player Ashley DeYoung (jr. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) had two hits one double.  First baseman Damariz Mercado (jr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) registered a double, two RBIs and one run.  Right fielder Morgan Smith (so. Millsboro, NJ/Sussex Central), second baseman Carly Anderson (fr. Nutley, NJ/Nutley) and center fielder Gianna Genello (fr. West Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) had one hit and one run apiece. 
 
The Falcons jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning.  Rowan went ahead with six runs in the fourth inning.  DeYoung led off with a single to the left side and was replaced by pinch runner Rosalie Hood (so. Egg Harbor City, NJ/Cedar Creek).  Smith and Anderson followed with back-to-back singles to load the bases.  Mercado knocked in Hood and Smith with a double down the left field line.  Pinch hitter Amanda Parker (so. Midland Park, NJ/Midland Park) had a sacrifice fly and Anderson came home. Genello reached base on an error and Mercado scored.  Genello crossed the plate on Snead's double.  Snead went to third on a wild pitch and continued home on an error.

Messiah took back the lead with four runs in the bottom half of the inning.  Allen walked with the bases loaded and right fielder Shannon Denny (so. Raleigh, NC/Needham B. Broughton) scored.  Notte drove in two runs with a single and Jones came home on a fielder's choice with Allen at bat.  The Falcons added one run in the sixth.  Pinch runner Haylee Anders (fr. Seven Valleys, PA/Dallastown Area) scored on a ground out by Cressman.
 
This is Rowan's fifth trip to the national championship tournament.  The Profs took fourth place in 1993 and 1994.  Rowan was an automatic qualifier for the national tournament as the New Jersey Athletic Conference Champion.  The Profs have advanced to the NCAA postseason six straight years and 24 times overall.
