Softball Splits Doubleheader Against The College Of New Jersey

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 GLASSBORO, NJ  – The Rowan University softball team split a doubleheader against The College of New Jersey on Wednesday.  The Profs won the first game, 12-2 in five innings and the Lions came back to take the second, 7-5.
 
In the opener, designated player Ashley DeYoung (jr. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) and right fielder Morgan Smith (so. Millsboro, DE/Sussex Central) each recorded four RBIs.  Smith had two hits in four at bats and two runs.  Shortstop Shilah Snead (sr. Malaga, NJ/Delsea Reg.) was two for two at the plate with one RBI and three runs.  Second baseman Carly Anderson (fr. Nutey, NJ/Nutley) and first baseman Damariz Mercado (jr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) each contributed with one RBI.  Third baseman Nicole Paiotti (so. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) added one RBI and scored two runs.
 
Right-hander Beth Ann Hyland (sr. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) was the winning pitcher.  She (9-2) gave up five hits and two runs.  Hyland struck out seven batters.  Katie Hourihan (sr. Neptune, NJ/Neptune) had the loss on the mound. 
 
Rowan led 4-0 after scoring two runs in the first and second innings.  In the first, Snead scored on Smith's ground out and Mercado had a RBI single.  Smith had a RBI base hit in the second and Snead came home on a fielder's choice with DeYoung at bat.  Both teams had two runs in the fourth inning. 
 
The Profs ended the game early with six runs in the fifth.  Snead produced a RBI single.  Paiotti walked with the bases loaded.  Snead crossed the plate on a fielder's choice with Smith at bat.  DeYoung recorded a three run homer.  It was her sixth home run on the season. 
 
Right-hander Sam Platt (so. Cedar Grove, NJ/Mt. St. Dominic Academy) had the win in the second contest while righty Ashley Lesch (so. Rockaway, NJ/Morris Knolls) took the loss.
 
Left fielder Madison Levine (so. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) led the Lions with two hits (three at bats), two RBIs and one run scored.  Catcher Jamie Purcell (sr. Nutley, NJ/St. Dominic Academy) chipped in with two RBIs while first baseman Jess Santelli (fr. Hillsborough, NJ/Hillborough) and third baseman Jess McGuire (fr. Stockton, NJ/Hunterdon Central Reg.) each had one.  Shortstop Steph Vuono (sr. Voorhees, NJ/Eastern Reg.) registered a solo home run.
 
Anderson went three for four with a double and one RBI.  DeYoung tallied two hits and one RBI.  Left fielder Mia Baldassari (so. Lake Hopatcong, NJ/Morris Knolls) and Smith had one RBI apiece.
 
TCNJ got on the scoreboard first with four runs in the top of the first inning and Rowan had two in the bottom half.  Baldassari knocked in Snead with a double and she scored on DeYoung's hit up the middle.  The Lions were ahead 7-2 after one run in the second inning and two in the fourth.  The Profs had three runs in the seventh.  Pinch runner Sammy Vradenburg (jr. Park Ridge, NJ/Park Ridge) scored on an error.  Anderson doubled home Smith and pinch runner Kristina Mueller (fr. Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) stole home.
 
Rowan has a rescheduled doubleheader at Montclair State University on Friday, April 9 at 3 p.m.
