Softball Shuts Out William Paterson, 4-0 and 9-0

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WAYNE, NJ  – The Rowan University softball team shut out William Paterson University, 4-0 and 9-0 on Wednesday. 
 
The Profs are 31-7 overall and 14-2 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference for first place.  The Pioneers have a 27-9 record with a 9-7 NJAC mark.
 
Right-hander Beth Ann Hyland (sr. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) pitched a complete game for the shutout in the opener.  She (18-3) only allowed five hits and had five strikeouts.  Righty Allison Podmajersky (jr. Red Bank, NJ/Middletown S.) had the loss.  She (17-4) allowed eight hits and four runs, one earned.
 
Second baseman Carly Anderson (fr. Nutley, NJ/Nutley) totaled three hits in four at bats and one RBI.  Left fielder Mia Baldassari (so. Lake Hopatcong, NJ/Morris Knolls) was two for four with one homer and two runs.  Right fielder Morgan Smith (so. Millsboro, DE/Sussex Central) and third baseman Nicole Paiotti (so. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) each added one hit and one RBI.  Designated hitter Ashley DeYoung (jr. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) and center fielder Gianna Genello (fr. West Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) scored one run apiece.
 
Designated player Salina Pellios (jr. Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) had two hits in three at bats for the Pioneers.  Center fielder Eleni Lutas (so. Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock) and Podmajersky each tallied one hit.
 
The Profs scored three runs in the fifth inning.  Genello reached base on an error.  Baldassari singled to center field and Genello advanced to second.  DeYoung was intentionally walked to load the bases.  Smith's base hit through the left side scored Genello.  Baldassari came home on a single up the middle by Anderson and Paiotti drove in DeYoung.  In the seventh inning, Baldassari led off with a solo home run to right field.  
 
Right-hander Allison Nolan (sr. Middletown, NJ/Middletown S.) was the winning pitcher in the nightcap. She (4-0) only gave up four hits in six innings and struck out five batters.  Pitcher Gabrielle Castelli (jr. Cedar Grove, NJ/Cedar Grove) took the loss. 
 
Baldassari was three for four with two RBIs and one run.  Shortstop Shilah Snead (sr. Malaga, NJ/Delsea Reg.) registered two hits and scored two runs.  Anderson chipped in with two hits, two RBIs and two runs.  Pinch hitter Angela Antonini (fr. Gibbstown, NJ/Gloucester Catholic), first baseman Damariz Mercado (jr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield), Smith and Young all had one RBI. 
 
Genello contributed with two hits and one run.  Catcher Alyssa Sims (sr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill W.) and left fielder Sammy Vradenburg (jr. Park Ridge, NJ/Park Ridge) scored one run apiece.
 
Rowan produced three runs in the fourth inning.  Sims had a single and went to second on a throwing error.  She moved to third on Genello's base hit.  Genello stole second and Snead was hit by a pitch.  Baldassari plated Sims and Genello with a single through the right side.  Smith reached base on a fielder's choice, scoring Snead.
 
In the sixth, DeYoung came home on Mercado's single to right field.  Anderson had a base hit up the middle and later scored on a wild pitch.  DeYoung posted a RBI single in the seventh and Snead crossed the plate.  Anderson knocked in two runs with a base hit up the middle.  She came home on an error for the final run.
 
Rowan's last regular season doubleheader is at Rutgers-Newark on Saturday, April 30 at 1 p.m.
