Box Score 2 GALLOWAY, NJ – The Rowan University softball team split a conference doubleheader at Stockton University on Sunday. The Profs had an 8-3 win in the first game and the Ospreys took the second, 3-2 in nine innings.
Right-hander
Beth Ann Hyland (sr. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) pitched 5.1 innings for the victory in the opener. She scattered five hits and gave up three earned runs. Pitcher Samantha Shockey (sr. Deptford, NJ/Deptford) had the loss.
Right fielder
Morgan Smith (so. Millsboro, DE/Sussex Central) recorded a home run, three RBIs and two runs. Third baseman
Nicole Paiotti (so. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) contributed with two hits and one RBI. First baseman
Damariz Mercado (jr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) added two RBIs while left fielder
Mia Baldassari (so. Lake Hopatcong, NJ/Morris Knolls) and catcher
Alyssa Sims (sr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill W.) chipped in with one apiece.
Center fielder
Gianna Genello (fr. West Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) and designated player
Ashley DeYoung (jr. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) each registered two hits. Shortstop
Shilah Snead (sr. Malaga, NJ/Delsea Reg.) tallied two hits (one double) and scored one run. Second baseman
Carly Anderson (fr. Nutley, NJ/Nutley) crossed the plate twice.
For the Ospreys, first baseman Dominique Dorris (sr. Mantua, NJ/Clearview Reg.) was two for three with one RBI. Catcher Alexa Massa (so. Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) produced one hit (two at bats) and two RBIs. Right fielder Holly Arentowicz (jr. Roxbury, NJ/Roxbury) had two hits in two at bats and scored one run.
Rowan led 7-0 after three runs in the first inning and four in the second. Paiotti had a RBI single in the first and Mercado drove in two runs with a double down the left field line. In the second, Baldassari's single up the middle scored Snead. Smith blasted a three run homer to right center field. It was her ninth home run on the season.
Stockton got on the scoreboard with one run in the fourth. Massa hit a single to right field and Arentowicz came home. The Profs' eighth run came in the fifth inning. Anderson scored on a base hit by Sims. The Ospreys had two runs in the sixth. Dorris knocked in designated player Danielle Lugo (so. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) with a single and pinch runner Samantha Liepe (so. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) scored on a fielder's choice.
Pinch hitter Victoria Conklin (sr. Randolph, NJ/Randolph) knocked in Stockton's winning run in the bottom of the ninth in the second contest. Center fielder Nicole Tomo (sr. Cedar Grove, NJ/Cedar Grove) started on second because of the international tie-breaker rule. Tomo advanced to third on a sac bunt by second baseman Gianna Cuffari (sr. Cedar Grove, NJ/Cedar Grove). Conklin's single went down the right field line and Tomo scored.
The Profs are 25-7 overall and 8-2 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. Stockton has a 22-8 record with a 6-4 conference mark.
Shockey pitched a complete game for the win in the nightcap. She (10-5) allowed five hits and two earned runs. Hyland (14-3) had the loss in relief.
Rowan's two runs came in the third inning. DeYoung had a RBI single, scoring Snead. Pinch runner
Rosalie Hood (so. Egg Harbor City, NJ/Cedar Creek) replaced DeYoung. Hood later scored when Mercado walked with the bases loaded. DeYoung ended the game with two hits (four at bats).
Stockton tied the score in the bottom of the seventh. Tomo led off with a triple down the right field line. She crossed the plate on a bunt single by Cuffari. Lugo reached base with a single. She went to second on Shockey's base hit. Lugo advanced to third with a fielder's choice and came home on the throw. Shockey, Cuffari, Lugo and Dorris all contributed with two hits.
