Box Score 2 GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University softball team swept Kean University, 6-1 and 1-0 in a conference doubleheader on Saturday.
The Profs are 24-6 overall and 7-1 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. The Cougars have a 14-14 record with a 6-4 conference mark.
Right-hander
Beth Ann Hyland (sr. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) pitched a complete game for the win in the opener. Hyland (13-2) only allowed three hits and one earned run. She struck out nine batters. Pitcher Kiele Eichlin (jr. Milford, NJ/Delaware Valley Reg.) had the loss on the mound.
Right fielder
Morgan Smith (so. Millsboro, DE/Sussex Central) produced two hits, a home run and three RBIs. Shortstop
Shilah Snead (sr. Malaga, NJ/Delsea Reg.) was two for four at the plate with one double, one triple, one RBI and one run. Left fielder
Mia Baldassari (so. Lake Hopatcong, NJ/Morris Knolls) contributed with two hits (four at bats), one RBI and one run. Third baseman
Nicole Paiotti (so. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hils) added one hit and one RBI.
For Kean, second baseman Emily Sabo (jr. Rahway, NJ/Rahway) had one hit (two at bats) and one RBI. Right fielder Tonianne DeMatteo (sr. Nutley, NJ/Nutley) registered a double and one run scored.
Rowan had a 3-0 lead after two runs in the first inning and one in the second. Snead scored in the first on a ground out by Smith. Paiotti had a RBI single up the middle that brought pinch runner
Rosalie Hood (so. Egg Harbor City, NJ/Cedar Creek) home. Baldassari drove in the run in the second with a single to left center field.
The Cougars' run came in the top of the third inning. With one out, DeMatteo had a double and she advanced to third on a bunt single by left fielder Olivia Zengel (fr. Stockton, NJ/Hunterdon Central). Sabo's base hit scored DeMatteo. In the bottom half, Smith led off with a solo shot. It was her eighth home run on the season. Rowan added one run in the fourth and fifth innings. Baldassari posted a single and came home on Smith's triple. In the fifth, center fielder
Gianna Genello (fr. West Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) crossed the plate on a double by Snead.
In the second contest, right-hander
Allison Nolan (sr. Middletown, NJ/Middletown S.) earned the victory on the mound in relief. Nolan (2-0) did not give up a hit in three innings and she had five strikeouts. Righty Shannon McMahon (jr. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) took the loss.
Designated player
Ashley DeYoung (jr. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) led the Profs with two hits (three bats) and a double. In the sixth inning, DeYoung doubled to right field. She was replaced by pinch runner
Kristina Mueller (fr. Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge). Smith reached on a single to center field and went to second on an error. Mueller came home on the error.
Rowan has a rescheduled doubleheader at Stockton University on Sunday, April 17 at 1 p.m.
