Box Score 2 KISSIMMEE, FL – The Rowan University softball team won its first two contests at the Rebel Spring Games on Friday. The Profs shut out Simpson College, 5-0 and had a 9-1 five inning victory against Baldwin-Wallace University.
Right-hander
Beth Ann Hyland (sr. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) was the winning pitcher against Simpson. She (2-2) only allowed four hits and had six strikeouts. It was the first loss on the mound for righty Abbie VanVleet. She (7-1) gave up 10 hits and five runs, three earned.
Shortstop
Shilah Snead (sr. Malaga, NJ/Delsea Reg.) went three for four with two doubles, one RBI and three runs. Second baseman
Carly Anderson (fr. Nutley, NJ/Nutley) contributed with two hits and two RBIs. Designated hitter
Ashley DeYoung (jr. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) chipped in with two RBIs. Left fielder
Mia Baldassari (so. Lake Hopatcong, NJ/Morris Knolls) added two hits in three trips to the plate.
The Profs scored two runs in the third inning. Center fielder
Gianna Genello (fr. West Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) came home on Anderson's hit up the middle. Snead crossed the plate on a ground out by DeYoung. In the fifth, DeYoung recorded a sacrifice bunt, scoring Snead who led off with a double. Rowan added two more runs in the seventh. Snead drove in catcher
Alyssa Sims (sr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill W.) with a double down the left field line. Anderson knocked in Snead with a base hit.
Rowan produced five runs in the bottom of the fifth against Baldwin-Wallace to end the game early because of the eight-run rule. Right-hander
Ashley Lesch (so. Rockaway, NJ/Morris Knolls) threw three innings for the win. She (2-1) surrendered three hits and one run.
Allison Nolan (sr. Middletown, NJ/Middletown S.) pitched two innings for the save and only allowed one hit. Righty Erica Morgan (2-4) had the loss.
Snead totaled three hits in four at bats, one double and two RBIs. Genello registered two hits (three at bats) and four RBIs. Sims was three for threewith one RBI and two runs. Baldassari had two hits and scored two runs.
DeYoung started the fifth with a solo homer to center field. With the bases loaded, pinch hitter
Sara Finnegan (jr. South Brunswick, NJ/South Brunswick) was hit by a pitch and third baseman
Nicole Paiotti (so. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) scored. Sims and Genello each tallied a RBI single. Snead ended the game with a hit up the middle and pinch runner
Rosalie Hood (so. Egg Harbor City, NJ/Cedar Creek) touched home plate.
In the second inning, Baldwin-Wallace second baseman DJ Rogers had a single that scored left fielder Lena Kortis. Rowan took the lead with three runs in the bottom half. With one out, Baldassari hit a double to left field. First baseman
Damariz Mercado (jr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) was hit by a pitch and Sims' base hit loaded the bases. Baladassari and Mercado scored on a single to left field by Genello. Snead recorded a double that brought home Sims. The Profs tacked on one run in the fourth. Sims recorded a triple and she crossed the plate on Genello's ground out.
Next, Rowan (4-4) plays Wheaton College (MA) at 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 12 and Messiah College at 11:15 a.m.
