UNION, NJ – The Rowan University women's basketball team lost to Kean University, 90-82 in overtime on Saturday afternoon.
Rowan trailed 72-66 with 2:34 on the clock in the fourth. Guard/forward
Summer Crilley (so. Galloway, NJ/Holy Spirit) hit a layup (2:14), guard
Anyssa Sanchez (jr. Stratford, NJ/Sterling) made a jumper (0:48) and guard/forward
Melissa Lake (gr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) made two free throws (0:08), sending the game to overtime tied at 72.
Kean opened the extra session on a 13-4 run to take an 85-76 lead with 1:55 remaining. Guard Marajiah Bacon (fr. Neptune, NJ/Neptune) netted six points and guard Jaquetta Owens (jr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield Tech) had five. The Profs got back to within five (87-82) after a layup by guard/forward
Kaitlin Schullstrom (gr. Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck) with 50-seconds remaining. Owens connected on a free throw (0:26) and Bacon hit two free throws (0:17) to ice the game.
The Profs are 19-3 overall and they have a 13-2 mark in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC). The Cougars are 14-8 with a 9-6 record in the league.
Bacon poured in 32 points and had five boards. Owens scored 25 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Forward Diana Todaro (fr. Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) grabbed 14 boards and tallied eight points. Forward Eden Obou (sr. Abidjan, Ivory Coast/West Side) corralled 12 rebounds.
For Rowan, Crilley recorded a career-high 17 points. Schullstrom had 16 points. Forward
Kate Matthews (gr. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) collected a career-high 21 rebounds and scored 15 points. Guard/forward
Alex Raring (so. Linwood, NJ/Mainland Reg.) and Sanchez added 12 and 10 points respectively.
Bacon scored the first basket of the game off the opening tip then Rowan tallied 10 straight for a 10-2 lead (6:06). Matthews tallied eight points. The Profs maintained the cushion for the rest of the period and took a 19-16 advantage to the second.
Guard Miesha Bacon (fr. Neptune, NJ/Neptune) trimmed the deficit to one (19-18) at the 9:24 mark of the second quarter. The Profs collected the next seven points on a three-pointer by Crilley (9:05) and four made free throws by Raring (8:24 and 8:00) and led 26-18. Rowan was in front 28-20 (7:20). The Cougars used an 8-0 spurt to tie the game at the 4:47 mark. The score was then knotted at 30 (3:46). The teams traded baskets and Kean led 36-35 (1:55). Rowan scored the final six points of the half and went into the break with a 41-36 lead.
Rowan recorded the first four points of the third to extend the cushion to nine (45-36) with 6:53 on the clock. The Profs were in front 52-45 (3:56) then Kean cut it to three (52-49) with 3:40 to play. The Cougars got to within three twice in the final minute, including after Marajiah Bacon's two free throws to make it 59-56 at the end of the third.
Kean started the fourth with a 10-0 spurt, taking a 66-59 advantage at the 5:19 mark. Rowan responded with the next seven points to tie the game at 66 (3:47). Guard
Valerie Garofalo (jr. Ventnor, NJ/Holy Spirit) had five points. The Cougars tallied six consecutive to go back up by six, 72-66 (2:34).
