CHESTER, PA – The Rowan University women's basketball team never trailed in a 93-73 non-conference victory at Widener University on Tuesday.
The Profs improve to 8-2 on the season while the Pride drops to 3-6.
Guard
Anyssa Sanchez (sr. Pine Hill, NJ/Sterling) paced Rowan with 23 points. She was 9-of-12 from the field and 3-for-5 from the foul line. Guards
Summer Crilley (jr. Galloway, NJ/Holy Spirit) and
Samantha Tello (fr. Elmwood Park, NJ/St. Mary's) and center
April Szymczyk (jr. Jackson, NJ/Jackson Liberty) all netted 10 points. Crilley added seven rebounds and four steals while Szymczyk grabbed five boards. Tello also had four steals. Guards
Valerie Garofalo (sr. Ventnor, NJ/Holy Spirit) and
Olivia Rulon (so. Cape May Court House, NJ/Wildwood Catholic) chipped in with nine and seven points respectively.
Guard Devan Rimmer (fr. Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) led Widener with 17 points and guard Angelica Borja (fr. Somerville, NJ/Somerville) followed with 15 points. Rimmer also dished five assists. Guard Kylie Herman (fr. Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin) contributed with eight points. Forward Emily Hardy (so. Lewisberry, PA/Cedar Cliff) and guard Allison Gallagher (jr. Souderton, PA/Souderton) each registered seven points and Hardy corralled seven rebounds.
Gallagher hit a jumper to tie the score at seven with 6:31 left in the opening quarter. The Profs went on a 16-3 run to lead 23-10 at 9:42 of the second. Six different players recorded points in the stretch, including five by guard
Alexis Kriley (fr. Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn). Rowan increased its advantage to 18 (47-29) going into halftime.
In the third, Rimmer's two free throws (2:02) brought the Pride within 18 again (64-46). The Profs had a 13-4 surge for their largest lead of the contest, 77-50 with 6:59 to go in the fourth. Six players contributed points in the run. The closest Widener got the rest of the way was 16 (82-66) after a 12-2 spurt that ended with 4:08 on the clock.
After the holidays, the Profs travel to Puerto Rico for a pair of games. Rowan faces Albright College on Wednesday, Dec. 28 at noon and battles Berry College (GA) on Thursday, Dec. 29 at 2 p.m.
