Box Score MONTCLAIR, NJ – The Rowan University women's volleyball team lost at Montclair State University, 3-1 in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) action on Tuesday night.
The set scores were 25-19, 25-22, 22-25 and 25-21. The Profs have an overall record of 3-13 and they are 2-2 in the NJAC. The Red Hawks are 16-2 overall with a 4-1 conference mark.
Outside hitter/opposite Hayley Merrill (jr. West Windsor, NJ/West Windsor Plainsboro S.) led Montclair State with 16 kills. Middle blocker/outside hitter Rebecca Matasker (sr. Washington Twp., NJ/Westwood) tallied 10 kills and four blocks. Setter Ashley Griffith (so. Westwood, NJ/Westwood) accumulated 45 assists, 13 digs and three service aces. Libero/defensive specialist Danielle Olcese (jr. Long Valley, NJ/West Morris C.) tallied 28 digs. Setter/right side/outside hitter April DiAngelo (so. Clifton, NJ/Clifton) added 13 digs, while libero Lily Scanzillo (jr. Upper Saddle River, NJ/Northern Highlands) had 10.
For Rowan, outside hitter
Megan Jacobi (fr. Nazareth, PA/Nazareth Area) had 14 kills. Outside hitters
Kailey Gallagher (fr. Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) and
Erica O'Hagan (sr. Cedar Grove, NJ/Cedar Grove) along with middle hitter/opposite
Jamie Shirtz (so. Mendham, NJ/West Morris Mendham) each tallied eight kills. Setters
Katelyn Paxson (fr. Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) and
Kat Wolf (sr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) recorded 18 and 15 assists respectively. Wolf also had 15 digs. Defensive specialist/libero
Rebecca Dantonio (sr. Glen Mills, PA/Garnet Valley) picked up 20 digs and middle hitter
Erin Keegan (so. Fairfield, NJ/West Essex) added 14 digs.
The first set was tied at nine before Montclair State went on a six-point run for a 15-9 advantage. The score was 20-13 before Rowan was able to pull to within 22-19. The Red Hawks ended the set with a pair of kills and a block.
The Profs jumped out to a 7-3 lead in set two, but Montclair State fought back and took a 9-8 advantage. Rowan trailed 11-9, but reeled off three straight to go back in front 12-11. The set had 15 ties, including at 22. The Red Hawks scored the final three points to take the set.
The Profs never trailed in the third set, leading by as many as five points (15-10). The Red Hawks got as close as two points several times, but not get closer. The Profs led 24-19 then Montclair State scored three straight to make it 24-22, but Gallagher recorded a kill to end the set.
The fourth set was another tight affair with nine ties and five lead changes. Rowan led 17-15 when Montclair State went on a six-point run to take the lead. The teams traded the final six points of the match two at a time, but Montclair State tallied the final two to take the match.
Rowan travels to Neumann University for the Knights' Fall Classic on Friday, Oct. 7. The Profs face Keystone College at 4 p.m. and King's College at 6 p.m.
