Women's Basketball Wins Over New Jersey City, 67-53

JERSEY CITY, NJ – The Rowan University women's basketball team recorded a 67-53 win over New Jersey City University in conference action on Saturday afternoon.
 
The Profs have an overall mark of 18-2 and they are 12-1 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC). The Gothic Knights are 1-17 overall and they have a 0-12 conference record.
 
Guard/forward Kaitlin Schullstrom (gr. Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck) scored 20 points and had eight rebounds, five assists and five steals. Guard Anyssa Sanchez (jr. Stratford, NJ/Sterling) tallied 15 points, seven boards and six steals. Forward Kate Matthews (gr. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) recorded a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. She also blocked six shots.
 
For NJCU, guard/forward Deseree Johnson (sr. Red Bank, NJ/Monmouth Reg.) tallied 18 points and seven rebounds. Forward/center Sharaunda Fiedtkou (so. West Orange, NJ/Bayonne) scored 13 points and had 16 boards. Guard/forward Jazz Randall (jr. Parsippany, NJ/West Orange) and forward Ziyadah Williams (jr. Jersey City, NJ/University Academy Charter) each contributed with 10 points. Williams also corralled 10 rebounds.
 
Rowan jumped out to a 7-2 lead with 6:17 to play in the first quarter. NJCU then used an 8-2 run to take its first advantage, 10-9 (2:15). The Profs tallied the final three points of the quarter on a jumper by guard/forward Alex Raring (so. Linwood, NJ/Mainland Reg.) (1:58) and a free throw by guard/forward Ashanti Bishop (jr. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) (0:34) to take a 12-10 advantage to the second.
 
The score was tied at 14 (8:02) and 16 (7:02) in the second frame. The Profs went on an 18-2 run that made the score 34-18 with 2:17 on the clock. Schullstrom collected nine points, while four other Profs scored at least two. The team traded points in the final two minutes of the stanza and Rowan had a 38-22 lead at the break.
 
The Profs held a double-digit lead for the entire second half. The Gothic Knights trimmed the deficit to 11 points at the 8:34 mark of the third quarter and twice in the fourth. Sanchez made it a 17-point advantage (63-46) on a layup with 4:34 left in the fourth. Rowan took its largest lead of 18 points (67-49) after a triple by Schullstrom (1:48). NJCU scored the last four points of the game making the final margin 14.
 
Rowan hosts The College of New Jersey on Wednesday, Feb. 3 for National Girls & Women in Sports Day at 6 p.m.
