GALLOWAY, NJ – The #22 Rowan University women's basketball team lost its first conference game of the season, 85-53 at Stockton University on Wednesday night.
The Profs are now 15-2 overall and they have a New Jersey Athletic Conference mark of 9-1. The Ospreys are 13-3 overall and they are 8-2 in league play.
Guard Taylor Christina (jr. Franklinville, NJ/Delsea Reg.) poured in 23 points to lead all scorers. Forward Najha Treadwell (so. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) scored 16 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. Forward April Peterson (fr. Lafayette, NJ/High Point Reg.) had 12 points. Forward Sasha Williams (so. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill W.) recorded 14 boards and scored seven points.
For Rowan, guard
Valerie Garofalo (jr. Ventnor, NJ/Holy Spirit) collected 12 points. Guard
Summer Crilley (so. Galloway, NJ/Holy Spirit) had nine points off the bench. Guard/forwards
Kaitlin Schullstrom (gr. Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck) and
Ashanti Bishop (jr. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) each chipped in with eight points.
Stockton scored the first five points of the game and led 8-2 with 6:28 to play in the first quarter. Rowan used an 8-3 run to get to within one (11-10) at the 3:21 mark. Garofalo tallied four points. The Ospreys scored the next five to extend their advantage to six (16-10) with 2:13 remaining. Guard/forward
Alex Raring (so. Linwood, NJ/Mainland Reg.) (1:24) and Bishop (0:58) hit back-to-back baskets to make the score 16-14. Guard Francesca Gervato (jr. Toms River, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) netted two free throws (0:07 and 0:01) making it 18-14 after one.
Stockton started the second quarter with a 23-3 run, extending its cushion to 24 points (41-17) with 4:04 on the clock. Forward Marina Lukianov (sr. Howell, NJ/Howell) scored seven points and guard Shaqui Coppage (jr. Salem, NJ/Salem) and Peterson each had six. Rowan ended the frame with a 12-2 spurt that included four points apiece from Bishop, Garofalo and Crilley. The Ospreys took a 43-29 lead into the break.
Stockton collected four points to begin the third and led 47-29 (9:26). Rowan used an 8-0 spurt to get to within 10 points (47-37) at the 6:09 mark. The Opreys responded by scoring 13 of the final 17 points of the stanza to take a 60-41 lead into the fourth. Christina contributed with six points, Williams had five and Peterson added two. Rowan could only get as close as 18 points in the final quarter and the Ospreys were in front by as much as 34 points.
